I would agree if they manage the pension fund stupidly... NY's OSC actually does a pretty good job. The economic downturn which had municipalities whining that their contributions were higher only lasted a few years and the fund is back to running a surplus... and now that they've doubled the employee contribution rate, eliminated the free ride after 10 years, and reworked the final average salary calculation to almost guarantee a below average result (forget about pension padding): it would take a collossal financial meltdown for my generation of employees to cost anything to the taxpayer. |
