Yeah, dipstick heaters are a must, and lacking that, a 100 watt bulb or two under the hood against the engine works wonders to keep things somewhat sane for cranking. Back when I first moved upstate, we had a -40 night that cracked the engine block on a Buick. Not fun.

The REAL secret though to dealing with it is five layers of light clothing beneath the parka, and grow a beard. THEN it works. :)

Now think about all those Quebecois who are another 100 miles north of there. At least. And yeah, upstate is only too happy to offer the time of your life as long as you're peaceful and take care of one another. Up here, when the shit goes down you can die. Makes things different.
