Almost 20 years ago, a whole caravan of us NYC*EMS types joined a huge relief operation in Plattsburgh, when the entire area turned into a glacier. Besides experiencing the coldest f*cking cold I've ever suffered through in my entire life, I also discovered how seriously they take law enforcement up there. The cops were thoroughly prepared for anyone who even had a THOUGHT about taking advantage of the situation to pillage and plunder.The thing was, though, even with two pairs of thermals, lots of layers, and a ski jacket, all I wanted to do was sit in the Malone firehouse, and drink hot cocoa or tea. It was too cold for anyone to do criminal acts, or anything else... However, that summer, they had us all back up there, for the best thank-you party I ever enjoyed. It was almost worth having the diesel fuel in one of my trucks turn to Jello one hideously frigid night in Iceberg country... |
