Waitamilnnit...ALL theater and TV production unions in NYC (and a lot of other places) have exactly the same thing, and for the same reason--to keep nonunionized people's hands out of the pockets of union members.

One theatrical union I belong to, the Dramatists' Guild, (along with Actors' Equity) are just about all that keeps some producers honest. Without them, you'd see plays filling the house every night, but by some strange wise, the producers would say they can't turn a profit, therefore, never pay the cast, director, or playwright.

Unions like SAG-AFTRA, IATSE, and AFM are there for a reason. Your sister can join the union, and enjoy the same protections and benefits you're complaining about.
