What I meant was "more than was ever necessary in the first place".

They act like they have a right to control who has access to certain jobs.

Personal example.

My little sister studied TV production at St. Johns, and was looking for an internship as part of her senior year. She wanted to do TV production work, she likes technical directing (Control room stuff). But all the production internships that didn't involve driving into New Jersey were "Sit and Watch", and she wound up with a desk job at TV Land.

Why? Because the union contracts with the networks say that, in New York, only union members can touch the equipment. Which mean even though she could have been working on "Kelly and Michael", she would have just had to sit there and watch everyone else.

At this point she was not a novice when it came to the equipment. She'd been taking classes for three years on the stuff, and actually had spent the previous semester in a practicum that was live streaming St. Johns home games over the internet, and had done such a good job she remains on the payroll, even after she graduated back in May.

The closest she's come to major network exposure is having to watch Andrew W.K. drum all night back in June on an MTV webcast award show/event/thing because she knows how to use a machine called a "TriCaster", and that currently stands as a marketable skill.

Is it that important to "protect someone's job"? Are they that threatened by a skinny little 22 year old? Oh, wait, she might (Key Word) have a teeny-tiny chance of coming along and being better than someone who already has that job! and they can't have people who are actually good at a job taking it away from someone who's been paying them money to keep it, no matter how badly they suck at it.
