This morning, someone is offering on Ebay a Bx1 southbound transfer from 1947.
  • Bx1 Transfer on Ebay

  • ---
The details on the transfer confirm my memory about the lack of bus-to-trolley transfer privileges in The Bronx in that era. The transfer shown is valid:
At Mosholu Pkwy & Grand Concourse E. on Gun Hill Road Line.
At Fordham Rd & Grand Concourse, W or E on City Island - Fordham Line to Eastchester Rd only.
    West on Jerome-Bainbridge Ave. Line.
At 170 St & Grand Concourse E or W on 170 St Crosstown, E or W on Macombs Road Line.
At 165th St. & Grand Concourse, E on Concourse Hub Line.
    ---
In subsequent posts, I may refer to puzzling small items in the New York Times that mingle the issue of transfers with that of zones. The statement above to Eastchester Road only may suggest the ghost of a zone, or maybe there were two zones on Bx12. A NY Times brief article from 1939 (which I will treat later) implies zones on the Grand Concourse, but it may be that a person boarding a northbound Bx2 was not allowed a transfer to a Bx1 to reach Broadway & 231st St. Just maybe. In 1947, the item on Ebay, clearly offers a transfer from the Bx1 to the Hub branch, Bx2.

The link below is to a brief news story in the New York Times of March 20, 1945, "Bus Fares Cuts Ordered." The PSC decision forced Surface Transportation to eliminate the collection of a second five-cent fare by offering transfers. I interpret this article as requiring free transfers from the Bx2 to the Bx1 to finish a northbound trip to Broadway, and also from the Bx1 to the Bx2 to allow a rider to reach the Hub.
It looks as if the locale of contention in the second decision is Pelham Parkway and White Plains Road. It reads as if Bx13 passengers were not given free transfers valid on the Bx12 or the Bx7, and now the PSC was requiring Surface to supply those free transfers.

  • Bus Fare Cuts Ordered

  • ---
My spin on this is to note that the twelve routes Surface received in 1927 were rather long rides for a nickel. Whenever Bx13 was established, it ran only between Westchester Avenue & Castle Hill to the Globe Theater at Pelham Pkwy and White Plains Road, a distance of two miles for a nickel. Maybe Surface was fed up with the nickel fare and kept new routes short, and also did not give free transfers! In this case, the state PSC caught them at this game.

The NYC Department of Records or NYC Municipal Archives offers a trove of photographs of New York scenes.
The link below is to an 1922 photo of a Concourse bus going to The Hub. The bus is a double-decker with solid tires. I wonder whether the seats had cushions.

  • Concourse Bus in 1921 to The Hub

  • ---
The link below shows a northbound Concourse Bus from 110th St & 5th Ave. to Mosholu Pkwy in 1922. A slider below the center of the photo allows a good close-up view.
  • Northbound in 1922

  • ---
That page has three more photos, one clearly displaying a Dept. of Plant and Structures sign over the door to the driver's cabin.
    ---
When one enters the word "bus" in the search engine for the NYCMA site, you get many more photos from other boroughs.

Fifth Avenue Coach took over the routes in 1924. I cannot understand why FACCO cut back Route 1 from 110 St & Fifth Ave to 138 St & Concourse. It would have made a perfect connection to existing Fifth Avenue routes.

An excellent Steve Zabel photo of MaBSTOA 8346 southbound on the Grand Concourse at Bedford Park Blvd appears on bus.nycsubway.org

The weather is cold, and the Rheingold Beer ad is bright red. The roller sign clearly reads 1 TO 138 & CONCOURSE. St. Philip Neri church, built for a congregation of Croton Aqueduct workers, is behind the bus. Subway gratings line the traffic island.

The side roll sign read "10 RIVERDALE AVENUE" Interestingly, MaBSTOA side signs were route signs, while NYCTA side signs were destination signs.

    @northshore.
Thanks for pointing out the erroneous street-side route sign on the Concourse bus with batwings or elephant ears.
In this view of 8066 on the Q36, I can see the large destination sign over the center exit.
  • 8066 with destination sign above the center exit door

I notice that on many of those advertising panels there was no roller sign on the driver's side. They must have been a nuisance to roll and to maintain.
