BQM1 to BM5 starting May 29th

I was asked to post the following infomation from my Spring Creek contact.
Starting May 29th(the start of the new pick for Spring Creek), the BQM1 will be renamed to BM5. They already have new schedules in the garage that shows BM5 on the timetable cover and the pick sheets even show BM5 on them.
I don't really know the exact reason behind it but I got 1 reason behind this and that is: some people who want the BM1 ends up boarding a BQM1 because it has the #1 in it.
However, this can be the sign of things to come in the near future for some of the other routes

If they think like this in a system-wide manner the QM1A confusion will end soon.

May 29th sounds odd though. That it is a Tuesday. Service changes never start in the middle of the week. Are you sure of the date?

But I still wonder why they have the B100 and B103 when there's no B90 or something being used. or having the B103 renumbered as the B101.

I would expect that it be done into the existing numbering scheme (assuming the routes survive til then).

Spring Creek would have X33-6 and 40.

Queens has 52-62, 65-7, and higher available.

Bronx could use whatever else is available.

Any sort of change that affects in the least bit the rider's experience should be posted as soon as it is sure it will happen. Who knows how the riders will be informed of this?

BTW, I actually did see one of the service notices posted about the Q35 being limited in Brooklyn. I had to squint to read it and this particular notice was closer to the back of the bus than the front.

For service changes like the new BM5 and such, since they have so much space for ads, the banners should take up the length of the bus. I believe MTA is responsible not necessarily for forcing information into passenger's minds but at least making it very very difficult to miss. Posting one notice per bus and not in a presentable location does not cut it.

Do some people really read the destination signs on a bus?

In the pre-MTA bus days, I used to ride the Q19A and Q101R buses. Northbound at 21st Street and 41st Ave, while I was on a Q101R, a customer asked if this bus was the Q19A. (Can't he see the difference between a bus having a orange stripe from a bus having a red stripe?).

Don't be so quick to criticize the passenger.

1. The MTA's borough bus maps do not indicate what color stripes particular buses carry. Even if the maps did so indicate, it was not uncommon for buses to be swapped around amongst the garages and have a wrong-colored stripe in place.

2. The passenger may have realized that many bus drivers fail to change the headsign to the proper route when starting out on a trip, and though it might be best to check on this rather than miss the bus.

It should be one system, or the other, however...and IMO, it should be modified to the NYCTA system.
