According to the Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q88_(New_York_City_bus):Service started on September 16, 1974, after the New York City Board of Estimate approved a franchise for the route on September 12. The route's original eastern terminal was Springfield Boulevard and Union Turnpike. In January 1979, it was announced that Q88 service would be extended from Union Turnpike to Hillside Avenue, with those buses heading along Springfield Boulevard to Jamaica Avenue, on the way to Queens Village Bus Depot, running in service, making stops along Springfield Boulevard, instead of deadheading. On July 15, 1988, the MTA Board approved the extension of all trips on the route along Springfield Boulevard from Hillside Avenue to Jamaica Avenue to simplify service. At the time, 40 percent of trips operate to and from Jamaica Avenue, on an irregular basis. The change took effect on September 11, 1988. (See the page itself for sources.) |

A couple of observations about the Q88:It's the only eastern Queens route that connects to the Queens Blvd. line but not the E or F trains directly, as Woodhaven Blvd. is a local-only stop. Its route contributed to the demise of the Q75, as the only portion of the Q75 not duplicated by other routes ended up being the short segment at the eastern end along 69th Ave. in Oakland Gardens. |

Thanks.I've always thought of this route as being mostly a feeder from the Queens/Woodhaven Blvds complex to get people to/from Eastern Queens. But as reverse commuting has become a thing, I'm wondering if there's any significant ridership getting off the LIRR at Queens Village looking for the Q88. |

Theoretically a route from Oakland Gardens finding the closest straight line to Forest Hills via 73rd Ave and Jewel Ave might make sense on paper. I can't remember if one of the early drafts of the Queens redesign had something approximating that. But anyway the final decisions made it very clear that access to Queensborough was a top priority, and the added Jewel Ave service (the new Q74) was sent there instead of via 73rd or Oakland Gardens. |

IIRC, part of one of the stages of the Queens bus redesign included extending the Q64 eastward along 73rd Avenue, which I thought was way overdue, but it was ultimately removed from the plans. When I asked (on this chat) why, I was told that community opposition was responsible. |

Years before the Queens bus redesign, I thought the Q64 should be extended east of 164 St via 73 Av to a terminus at the traffic circle at 188 St & 64 Av. It would have given Fresh Meadows residents direct access to Forest Hills and the express trains at Continental Av. As it was, they had direct access to express subways only at Jamaica or Flushing. (The Q88 goes to a local stop at Woodhaven Blvd.) But 73 Av in that area is a very residential street of private homes, albeit with a bike lane, and I can imagine the negativity such a route would cause. |
