W.B.'s Bus Almanac for June 1st

Posted by W.B. on Mon Jun 1 03:30:16 2026

June 1, 1940 - The Book of Ownership and Operational Changes

Brooklyn, New York
Brooklyn Bus Corporation
Brooklyn & Queens Transit Corporation
Board of Transportation of the City of New York

With the takeover of the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation by the Board of Transportation as part of their "unification" of the subway system (preceding by over a week their acquisition of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company), its surface divisions, Brooklyn Bus Corp. and Brooklyn & Queens Transit, also fall under municipal ownership, thus giving them control over a slew of bus and trolley routes in and around Brooklyn and part of Queens. It is very likely the routes B&QT had operated that, on bus transfers in later years, were known as "BMT Bus Division," while the Brooklyn Bus routes were rebranded "Brooklyn Bus Division."

One other item forgotten . . .

June 1, 1956 - The Book of Corporate Name Changes

New York City
New York City Omnibus Corporation
Fifth Avenue Coach Lines, Inc.

Effective as of this date, the New York City Omnibus Corporation, operator of routes of that company plus the Fifth Avenue Coach Company (the latter since November 1954), changes its name to Fifth Avenue Coach Lines, Inc. The name change had been approved by stockholders on May 14. The new nomenclature will be on all rolling stock that runs on the routes of both the FACO and NYCO Divisions, as they will be known for the next several years, even up to the early years of the Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (MaBSTOA).
