In six months, the MTA will return perhaps 50 bus stops, with over 1,700 still being eliminated. There will be a few route modifications and the MTA will declare success by stating that buses are operating 10 percent faster or so (neglecting to mention it is less than 1 mph faster), even if most trips are taking longer and fares are increased for those needing an additional transfer after the second bus transfer experiment ends."Second bus transfer experiment?" What's that and how come I've never heard of it? |

They announced for six months they will allow two bus transfers for free in Queens with OMNi.After that from usage, they will decide what to do regarding a second transfer. It was also vague if the bus transfers has to be consecutive. So we don’t know how many fares a bus to a train to a bus would cost, probably still double fare. |

Nothing is mentioned in the current tariff as to extra bus transfers. For that matter, the tariff does not appear to be updated as to revised routes in Queens, nor does the tariff even allow fare payment to be made with OMNY. Appendix I to the tariff, which describes all the special transfer privileges, now seems to be as complicated as the free transfers that once existed throughout New York City used to be. Download the tariff from this webpage: http://www.mta.info/fares-tolls/subway-bus. |

This is directly from the MTA website under Queens bus network redesign“ Starting June 29, 2025, Queens bus riders who tap to pay using the same device or card will get a second free bus transfer on every trip. The first transfer must be within two hours of the first tap and the second transfer must be within three hours. The MTA will pilot this additional free transfer for approximately six months while evaluating the new Queens bus network.” |

Posted by BusMgr on Mon Sep 15 22:30:19 2025, in response to Re: Queens bus network redesign letters, posted by Allen45 on Mon Sep 15 20:34:47 2025. In earlier years it was the Board of Estimate that took the leading role in designing the city's bus routes. The Board did not have absolute control, because it had to design routes for which there would be bus companies submitting submitting competitive proposals, but it could, and did, exercise substantial control. Had private companies continued to this day, such redesign could have been accomplished by the Board of Estimate or its successor.Today, the city council has the role that the Board of Estimate once had, and it would be best if the city council exercised its power--as representatives of the city's citizens--to design the city's bus routes, rather than having the MTA--filled with board members representing the state and the suburbs--doing so on behalf of the city. |

The problem with putting any sort of cap on the time between bus tranfers is that overnight when there are hour long headways on many lines, the transfers could time out before passengers have a chance to use them. |
