Depending on the time frame you are referring to, the B1 in its history made 2 changes the original B1 only ran from Sheepshead Bay into Bensonhurst around 86 St and 25 Ave. I’m not sure of the exact date but it was combined with the Bay Ridge Ave bus which was numbered B34 and the combined through route was numbered B1. Av few years ago, the B1 was routed off Bay Ridge Ave where it turned after making a zig at 86St/13 Av and straight lined down 86 St the 87 St/4 Ave. The B64 which had formerly gone the 87/4 was routed up 13 Av to Bay Ridge Av replacing the old B1 to Shore Rd.

Ask BrooklynBus. He was the one who redesigned them, mostly based on his Master's Thesis. The changes were made in November 1978.

Thanks randyo as always!
And for those who may not know these are around, here are some old bus maps. I come back to the 1969 Brooklyn and Staten Island ones a lot.

The former change was made in 1978 and the latter in 2010. The 1978 changes also rerouted the B1 through Brighton Beach. The old route stayed on Avenue X to E 14 (E 13 return) and then ran through Sheepshead Bay.

For a brief period in the early 1980s the B9 ran a summer service all the way to Riis Park in the Rockaways.

It was for two years, 1981 and 1982, I believe, , weekends only via a federal grant. Also, the B46 which was always crowded, more than the B9. Service stopped at 9 PM. One hot weekend 500 were left stranded and slept on the beach. The MTA refused to maintain service without the grant citing budget constraints. I guess they claimed they were still losing money.

B34 was combined with the B1 which was rerouted through Brighton Beach replacing the B21 on Sunday, November 12, 1978.

Actually the original B1 did not run all the way to 25 Avenue. Parts of the B1 and B21 began in the 1920's as routes A, B, and C. I forget which was which. I think "A" operated from Coney Island Hospital to Emmons and Brigham St. "B" ran from CIH to Mackenzie and Oxford via Ave X and West End Ave , and "C" from CIH to to Mackenzie and Oxford via Brighton Beach Ave. "A" was combined with with "C" to become the B21 in 1946. "B" became the B1. Not sure when the B1 was extended to 25 Ave but it was between 1936 and 1946.

But I remember in the 1950s, the B8 changed several times where it switched between Avenue D and Foster. For a few years it even used one of the East 30th numbered streets southbound. Guess the residents complained.

The A, B, and C reroutes became the 1A, 1B, and 1C routes. The original 2 ran from Avenue U and Flatbush to the foot of Flatbush Avenue. The 3 ran from 25 Avenue to Flatbush. And the 3A is the present B31. The B2 became the B32 when the current B2 started in June 1936. I assume the 3A became the 31 at the same time.

When the Marine Pkway Bridge opened, the B32 was discontinued and Green Lines took over the service as the Q35.

B1 through B21 were the original Brooklyn bus routes that never were trolleys. The B8 was originally the B8 and B10. They both terminated at Brighton Station. Forget which half was the B8. The B9 terminated at Bay Parkway and the eastern half operated to E 16 Street as the B20. When the numbers 10 and 20 were no longer used, they were reused in other parts of Brooklyn. I believe the number 21 was originally used as the southern part of the B6 below 60 Street before it was used to replace the 1A and 1C. Not sure when the B prefixes started.

Would you know how the B49 terminated and turned around before it went to the college? The 1969 map just has the line disappearing at West End Ave and Oriental Blvd. Did it use a side street to turn around?

None of them thought to take the Green Bus?
I'm pretty sure the photograph of the city bus in Riis is from 1980.

I rode the B8 to high school 1970-74. Back then going towards the VA Hospital (or to Bay 7 Street) it ran down Avenue D, left on New York Avenue, right on Newkirk Avenue, left on Nostrand Avenue, right on Foster Avenue, etc.

Going toward East 83 Street (or to Kings Highway) it ran up Foster Avenue, left on Rogers Avenue, right on Avenue D, etc.

Thanks for the info. I was never quite sure how high up the “bus only” numbers went before numbers started to be assigned to trolley lines in the event PCCs were eventually assigned to those routes.

I remember when it saved running time by running thru the Fort Hamilton Army Base. Obviously can't do that anymore for security reasons.

Don't know the point of having it loop into/out of the VA Hospital, when the stop on Cropsey Ave Extension is a 10 second walk outside the hospital. I never see anyone get on or off at that stop, and it adds a few minutes running time by the time you wait for the traffic light. That's like having a bus stop on 86th St, then another stop midblock between 85th and 86th, then another stop at 85th, etc. Absolutely ridiculous.

The advantage is it maintains a connection to the Staten Island routes at 92nd Street.

Exiting the base towards 95th "R", it used to stop at Fort Hamilton Pkwy/Marine, a 5 min walk away to the SI routes.

Now the large number of military personnel no longer have public transit access to the base.

Is there an entrance from outside that they can use? (Either the Cropsey Avenue side or Marine Avenue side)

Actually, the B8 running up 7th Av & 92nd St is much faster than it used to be when it went into the base, it also provides faster transfer connections with keeping the B8 & all the SI buses stopping at the same bus together at 92nd St & Ft. Hamilton Pkwy.

Is that why numbers were assigned to trolley routes? My old Hagstrom book showed Church Avenue as Cars 8 and 13, not 35. One of the numbers was changed to 35 and the other was the Church McDonald route which turned south to Cortelyou before being shortened to Church.

The Green Bus would have meant a double fare and most were families so it meant a lot more money. Some also probably never took a privately operated bus before.

I thought I also remembered Newkirk but wasn’t sure so I didn’t mention it. But I do remember it on a numbered street in the 30s which I thought was strange that it didn’t use an Avenue.
