Why did they start the service? Did it ever have decent patronage?

I’m not sure of the actual patronage, but when I lived in Wash Hts and took the #3 I was glad when it was a Convent Ave because I liked that avenue better than St Nick.

FACO started the #3 Convent Ave. branch to directly serve the CCNY campus and the summer concerts at Lewisohn Stadium on the campus. #3 buses marked "Convent" branched off the St. Nicholas Ave. routing between 114th and 151st Streets. On a map Convent Avenue appears to be a short block to the west of St. Nicholas, but a steep cliff is the way above 127th Street.

From my notes, the Bureau of Franchises actually had allotted a franchise of M-44 - Lewisohn Stadium for the purpose of shuttling passengers to and from such summer concerts. This may've been what that branch was about. But also, they had an M-32 franchise, designated Morningside and Convent Avenues. Several such franchises were not for whole lines, but various extensions to and from the main Fifth Avenue trunk line of FACCo routes (the Bureau of Franchises assigned numbers M-26 to M-39, as well as M-43 and M-44, for that purpose; as with the NYCO/Madison Avenue Coach/Eighth Avenue Coach routes, none of the FACCo routes used such BoF-assigned numbers).
