Tuscarora Almanac for February 18

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Mon Feb 18 10:01:28 2019

Tuscarora Almanac – February 18, 1984 – The Book of Last Runs

The Bronx, New York
Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority
Bronx Division

MaBSTOA discontinues service on the Bx-21 Bronx-Astoria Line.

This route began operating on July 11, 1936 concurrent with the opening of the Triboro Bridge. It ran between East 138th Street-Southern Boulevard in the Bronx and 37th Street-24th Avenue in Astoria. It was designated as route “TB” and was operated by the New York City Omnibus Corporation. It was re-designated as the “Bx-21”. Old timers from the Bronx will recall that the Bx-21 number had previously been used by the Pelham Bay Park bus and was subsequently reassigned to the Boston Road-Morris Park Avenue line.

Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong but this route was probably a very light hauler at best. The other two TB routes from NYC Omnibus continue to this day. M35 is still the same as the TB Manhattan-Wards Island route, and M60 is a greatly expanded Manhattan-Astoria route.

When TB was renumbered three times over in 1974, M35 originally applied to Manhattan-Astoria, M34 to Manhattan-Wards Island, and Bx21 of course Bronx-Astoria. In 1976 M34 was discontinued and its route to Wards Island folded into M35. That year, all three routes were assigned out of the 132nd Street depot, oddly enough (in the first dozen years of MaBSTOA's existence TB's depot assignment ping-ponged every few years between 100th and 146th Street depots). By the time Bx21(II) was on its last legs up to its 1984 discontinuance, it was (I.I.N.M.) assigned out of Walnut (I presume M35 by then was back at 100th Street?).

The M35 Manhattan-Astoria leg was discontinued in 1995 - in no small part due to the M60 route which was begun three years before. So technically only one NYCO TB route still exists. (Just like today's M72 is otherwise unrelated to the old M30, ex FACCo Route 6.)

The M60 is a new route implemented circa 1990 and has no direct relationship with the TB route. The other TB routes were renumbered M34 (Manhattan-Wards Island) and M35 (Manhattan-Astoria) in 1974. By 1976, both routes were part of the M35. The M35 Astoria route continued to operate for several years after the implementation of the M60, but was eliminated in 1995.

I don't know why I didn't click on your post before posting my own redundant response. Sorry.

But also, as to the day at hand: Wasn't it on or about this date in '84 that the rush-hours only M5 branch that traveled through Riverside Drive up to 157th Street - a route which was descended from the old FACCo Rt. 19 (but in this form only ran since 1965) - was also discontinued for good, likewise due to low ridership?

WB: I didn't think that anyone else remembered the rush hour service along Riverside Drive between 135th Street and 157th Street.

The 1984, 85 and 87 bus maps all show the rush hour route in service.

The 1988 map does not show it.

Hmmm. So when in 1988 would it have been discontinued - around the time Q89 (ex FACCo 16, a.k.a. QM16) was?

I took the M5 Riverside via 157 St once in the morning rush southbound. There were about 5 passengers on it from 157 St to 135 St

I took the Q89 Elmhusrt Crosstown on an RTS the last day of service, taking a number of trips. I was the only passenger.
