Tuscarora Almanac for March 29 |

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Wed Mar 29 08:57:26 2017 Tuscarora Almanac – March 29, 1980 – The Book of Last Runs The Avenue B and East Broadway Transit Corporation discontinues operations. Its three routes are taken over by either MaBSTOA or the NYCTA. The routes were M-7 110th Street – Wall Street Express, M-8 Grand Street Crosstown and M-9 Avenue B. Upon takeover the M-7 was merged into the already existing X-23 Yorkville – Wall Street Express. The M-7 designation was also used by a MaBSTOA route. Prior to July 1, 1974, there were three M-7's - the third being the NYCTA's 66th Street crosstown that on that summer day that year became the M29 (and is today the M66). You could say that was a triplication of route numbers. |

When I was a kid in the early '60s we would go to the lower east side to buy pickles from Guss, and I would see these old buses, unlike any I had ever seen. Coming from Rego Park, with its GMC Green Buses on the Q60, I was fascinated by the Ave B buses, but, sadly, never rode them. They did eventually acquire modern buses before they closed up shop. |

My mother would take us down to Orchard Street on a Sunday to buy clothes. I remember seeing those shortened buses. Like yourself I never got around to riding them. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

We had one each for the NYCTA and MaBSTOA. I don't recall exactly when Avenue B began running their M-7 but I believe that it was sometime on the early seventies. What was interesting is that they were allowed to use the M-7 designation when there already were two routes operating with that designation. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Sort of like the 1972-74 period when there were two QM15's and QM16's operating. One set was MaBSTOA (ex-FACCo) Fifth & Madison Avenues/Jackson Heights and Elmhurst crosstown, respectively, while the other were Green Lines express bus routes (today operated by MTA Bus) to Manhattan out of Lindenwood and Far Rockaway (again, respectively). |
