Do they auction these 'as is' or is something done to prevent operation, given the expiration dates of the CNG tanks? When CNYRTA recently sold off their CNG Orion V's with expired tanks, they drilled holes in the tanks to make sure no one could operate the buses. |

The tire price is the dollar figure at the end of each listing. Tires are normally priced separately because they are often leased and the seller usually tries to recover remaining lease value. |

It's up to the buyer to make sure they are up to spec for operation, or a recycler buys them to part them out/salvage them. |

Their tanks didn't expire until 2014 (1999 buses with 15-year units), and they were replaced by the new MCI CNGs that year - they've been sitting in the Meadowlands "graveyard" lot ever since. NJT would have no reason whatsoever to spend that kind of cash to re-tank buses that were being replaced on time. |

Which would indicate re-tanking with 20 year tanks in 2013. Maybe they hedged against not getting replacements in time after the D-Line issue? I'm sure the rest of the pieces will fall into place in this saga, there always seems to be someone out there who has, as Paul Harvey used to call it, "the rest of the story" |

I stand corrected on the retanking, but the first 84 MCIs were ordered in September 2013, so NJT knew they were coming. Retanking those buses still doesn't make sense because of the severely limited market for them... who is going to buy a 16-year-old CNG motorcoach, who can also fuel it? If someone wants a coach for a motorhome, why would they buy a CNG that they'll likely have to repower and retank to diesel? They would just pass on these and find a used diesel coach. And how does NJT recover the cost of those tanks if they end up going to a recycler, who will bid at the bottom of the scale? If NJT needed interim coaches, they could have done the same thing they did before - rent buses from MCI (the "original" 7101-7120 MCIs). As tight as their finances are, retanking those CNGs seems like an unnecessary use of scarce funds. |

What you are saying makes complete sense. Maybe they only did a small group as a feasibility kind of trial? Sort of like repowering one or two hybrids. Lot of miles on them. Wish I had the whole story. |

There's still no market for a 16-year-old, 750,000-mile motorcoach with an alternative fuel system. The only other transit agency with CNG MCIs is Los Angeles DOT, and theirs are fairly new. I don't see any Mom&Pop charter outfit, church, or potential RV-conversion owner looking for such a vehicle, when they can buy a diesel of the same vintage and know it's more easily fueled and maintained... not to mention has far superior range. |

They are auctioning them, but in many smaller numbers than are being disposed of. I suppose someone in NJT wants to figure out if they are maximizing the scrap value of the vehicles. |

Educated guess would be he'd use them as shuttles for the apartment complexes. At just ten grand per bus, tanks good for another 18 years, and the better public availability of CNG in that area, it seems like a good buy for that purpose. |
