My sister recently read that residents in Coney Island were trying to get the X29 service restored. I for one would be up for riding the line as im not satisfied with BM3 service as it zig zags its way via sheepsead bay. Im aware weekday rush hour service was there but it there enough service to justify it comning back?

Last I heard, it would return if the new congestion charge came to fruition.

The X29 started running (as the 'B29X') back in 1972. I guess it was the least popular of the Brooklyn express routes, surprised it lasted as long as it did. When I lived in Brooklyn I used it a few times and it took forever to get from midtown to 18th Avenue. I still have the original 'B29X' flyer.

I've always wondered. . .does a lot of the BM3 ridership come from its Emmons Ave segment? It would seem to drive the passengers crazy as they have work through Batchelder and Ave X, although even that part used to be crazier before it was straightened out (I believe it had two separate segments on both Knapp St and Batchelder up until a few years ago).

But it's worth noting that express bus passengers tend not to mind roundabout routings as much (and, for some, like me, it's part of the fun). They know they aren't paying for a time savings.

The X29 didn't have as much service to warrant a special ride on the FDR. At the end it was the only Brooklyn express route-system not to have an FDR option. Maybe now with Midtown and Downtown each being the way they are, if the X29 followed the setup that the BMs currently have, it could take off again.

You mean most Brooklyn express riders aren't paying for a time savings. For most portions of Staten Island, and certain sections of The Bronx and Queens, the express bus is a definite time saver.

You can argue the UP express routes are a time saver, depending on the time of day and where you get on at.

I'll never forget riding a BM4 that took a hour and a half to go from Midtown to Flatbush, mind you this was during rush hour skipping Lower Manhattan. B and Q trains make that same trip in about a half an hour or so.

The X29 was the premium-fare alternative to the Culver and Brighton Lines. In the 70s and 80s it was a service and safety issue, the subways were a horror. Now it's more of a comfort and convenience issue. Longer Brooklyn - Manhattan travel times, but in a nice coach bus. Everything is a trade-off.

On SI the express buses are definitely faster than the train-ferry or bus-ferry combinations, especially to midtown.
