What does "Pass OK" mean?

Last Wednesday afternoon around 3:30 I swiped my senior easypay Metrocard in Manhattan (the turnstile display simply says "Go"), and then an hour later, around 4:30, transferred to a bus in Queens.

When I dipped my card on the bus, the display said only "Pass OK" instead of the usual message that I transferred and that no additional fare was deducted. I asked the bus operator what "Pass OK" means and he said he hadn't noticed the display and didn't know what it meant. I didn't know if another fare had been deducted.

It is impossible to check the balance on an easypay Metrocard at a subway station using either the booth, the reader, or the MVMs ("it will damage the card"); it must be done on-line or by calling the service center.

The next day I checked my account on-line, and noticed that the 3:30 subway swipe was correctly listed but the bus transfer was not listed at all; two days later, well after the bus would have reported its fares, the same was true: no mention of the bus ride.

I called the service center today, and after waiting in the queue for 35 minutes (!), spoke to a representative, who confirmed that no fare was deducted for the bus ride, but couldn't explain what "Pass OK" means, except to say that other customers had occasionally asked the same question.

So: what does "Pass OK" mean on a bus farebox display?

I only usually see it when I dip my employee Metrocard which of course is a true "pass."

This is normal for EasyPay MetroCards used on buses. All it means is that you are allowed to go on the bus. It is basically the equivalent of "go" on the bus. The reason why it says "pass ok" is because easy pay refills automatically.

Nothing to worry about. I've gotten "Pass OK" a number of times (with ordinary MetroCard, not even an easypay). It will either help you or leave you neutral. I have never lost a fare to it.

Since I usually get that display after the farebox held my card for a while (as if trying to read it) my hypothesis is that the system was having a hard time reading the card but was able to figure out enough about it that it was valid for the ride and no attempt at evading fare was being made. That's just a hypothesis though.

I've experienced that holding of the card while trying to read it, but that didn't happen here; the card came right back out with the "Pass OK" display instantaneous.

And earlier in the day, I swiped in Queens and transferred to a bus (with the normal bus displays) and both trips show up on my account statement, as they should.

The fact that the "Pass OK" trip doesn't show up on the statement makes it seem like it never registered my using it.

Earlier in the day I swiped in Queens and transferred in Manhattan and the bus displayed the correct messages and both trips appear on my statement. The "Pass OK" trip doesn't appear on the statement; it's as if it never occurred.
