What does "Pass OK" mean?

Last Wednesday afternoon around 3:30 I swiped my senior easypay Metrocard in Manhattan (the turnstile display simply says "Go"), and then an hour later, around 4:30, transferred to a bus in Queens.

When I dipped my card on the bus, the display said only "Pass OK" instead of the usual message that I transferred and that no additional fare was deducted. I asked the bus operator what "Pass OK" means and he said he hadn't noticed the display and didn't know what it meant. I didn't know if another fare had been deducted.

It is impossible to check the balance on an easypay Metrocard at a subway station using either the booth, the reader, or the MVMs ("it will damage the card"); it must be done on-line or by calling the service center.

The next day I checked my account on-line, and noticed that the 3:30 subway swipe was correctly listed but the bus transfer was not listed at all; two days later, well after the bus would have reported its fares, the same was true: no mention of the bus ride.

I called the service center today, and after waiting in the queue for 35 minutes (!), spoke to a representative, who confirmed that no fare was deducted for the bus ride, but couldn't explain what "Pass OK" means, except to say that other customers had occasionally asked the same question.

So: what does "Pass OK" mean on a bus farebox display?
