Some what improvement on SBS routes, figures are down for fare evasion. Im sure if they add more Eagle Team support, it will improve further for the routes that have fare evasion problems.

Station agents have a system that lets them see the history of any given MetroCard. If all passengers were required to make sure they keep the MetroCard they used for any given trip until that trip ends, and the Eagle Team was given the proper equipment, you can send them to any line you want -- though it is easier to just have random incognito police officers watch everyone who enters the bus, which I don't understand why there isn't more of.

Enforcement of farebeating on MTA's SBS routes is getting results, numbers show

Posted by Gold_12th on Wed Jan 29 14:37:20 2014, in response to MTA's Eagle Team report update, posted by Gold_12th on Mon Jan 27 13:40:50 2014.

The MTA is taking a swipe at bus farebeating — and getting results.

Since 2008, a team of Metropolitan Transportation Authority inspectors has written approximately 83,000 tickets for farebeating to bus riders, each summons carrying a $100 fine, authorities said.

Enforcement at first was limited to the MTA’s premier Select Bus Service routes, in which passengers purchase tickets on the sidewalk and don’t have to run their MetroCard through a machine to get onto the bus. But inspectors in the MTA’s so-called Eagle Team also began focusing attention last year on some problematic local bus routes too, officials said.

According to data released by the MTA at a board meeting on Monday, there’s been a dramatic reduction in riders who are boarding buses without paying for the trip.

On the newest SBS route — the B44 in Brooklyn — the estimated percentage of riders cheating the system dropped nearly 51%, according to a staff presentation.

On the Bx41 in the Bronx, “theft of service” dropped by 74% since the SBS line was established. And on the Bx12, also in the Bronx, it has been reduced by 80% since the line's inception, according to the presentation.

“The Eagle Team’s efforts have helped to stem the tide of the previously under-reported fare evasion problem,” MTA board member Allen Cappelli said. “We are beginning to send a message that we will not permit [people to] steal vital revenue that is needed for services for all New Yorkers.”

The MTA has estimated that it loses approximately $50 million in potential revenue per year because of bus riders who don’t pay the fare.

To speed up the boarding process, riders along SBS routes pay before boarding at curbside machines that dispense receipts as proof of purchase. The first of the six SBS routes was the Bx12, which was launched along Fordham Rd. in the Bronx in 2008. The last to go into service was the B44, which launched in November along Nostrand, Rogers and Bedford Aves. in Brooklyn.

Vincent DeMarino, vice president of security for the MTA’s NYC Transit division, said Eagle Team inspectors spend weeks handing out instructional fliers to educate riders about the off-board payment system before they start writing tickets on an SBS route.

“Our goal is not to bang people with summonses for not paying the fare,” DeMarino said. “Our goal is to get people to pay the fare.”

What if I can't obtain a receipt or have some other problem?

Write down the fare machine number; it is located on the front of each machine. If a machine is not working, please board the bus and tell the bus operator. If the machine does not issue a receipt or return your MetroCard or coins, use MetroCard eFIX to file a claim online at mta.info or call 511.

SBS B44 fare beeting down 51% ... of how many, e.g. of 10 to 5 is 50%

$50M in revenue or about $4M per month, that is still a lot.

then they should fix the out of order STREET MVM's..

my wife used this 44SBS TODAY..SOUTHBOUND from Dekalb avenue..inserted her card in the machine...got a INVALID CARD message..[this after she got off the B38]..INSERTED AGAIN..NO MONEY OR TRANSFER on the card..

the damn machine took all her money off her card, refused to give her a proof of payment slip.
she copied the serial number from the machine..talked to the driver when the bus came..got ON the bus..when the eagle team got on the bus at Lincoln..she approached them and told them what happen to her..he issued her a ticket anyway..told her she COULD FIGHT IT..took down her metro card number..then put her back on the bus so she wouldn't "miss her appointment"..never mentioning anything about all the cash she just lost on the damn card.

she was royally pissed..called me to tell me everything..i told her to phone the stone st call center to pass on the information about the card and machine..which she did..but now shes going to have to miss a day of work to deal with the ticket..

shes STILL FUMING. SWORE OFF BUSES for good...said shes going to drive in now.
cant blame her..

I strongly thought the same thing about 0.5 year ago. Now I think the streetcars should come back, but there are a whole bunch of things I think should be resolved before that is done, and even if those things I think should be resolved are resolved, it still may not make much sense to bring them back.

It is really messy, whether buses are kept or trolleys come in to replace them.

Two reasons I think trolleys would be better are that they offer more interior room for people and their cargo (no wheel wells under any seats, unlike buses), and the fact that the people who operate buses needed to know how to operate small automobiles first is an impediment to making society personal automobile-independent.

edf40wrjww2msgDetailB:detailStr

But again, for various reasons, it is a mess either way. One reason streetcars might not be great is that it would be harder to have an 'express' streetcar and a local streetcar following the same route. Expenses and road space constraints are two basic reasons we cannot have our cake and eat it too with 'express/local' streetcars.

It is easier for a motor bus line to have a local and 'express' (SBS or LTD) variant following the same route since you do not need one separate track for the local and one for the 'express' (again, SBS or LTD, not to be confused with real express bus lines that use OTR coaches).

It is a bit of a drag.

This is why I strongly believe that elected officials who do not use mass transit on a regular basis and use personal automobiles for 'reasons' that are not real reasons at all should not be in office in large cities like this one.
