"I think it's a bad idea." B44 Select Bus Service ... (PIX-11 news video)

Many Brooklynites couldn’t wait for this day. Others had no clue the B44 Select Bus Service was rolling into town.

Its ultra-fast route, along dedicated bus lanes, stretches about ten miles from Williamsburg to Sheepshead Bay, making it the city’s sixth such expedited line.

Transit officials estimate the select line will cut down a straphanger’s commute time by 20 percent.

Christopher Greif, a member of the New York City Transit Riders Council, monitored the first stop in Williamsburg Sunday morning.

“A lot of people are a little confused about where SBS buses are stopping,” Grief said. “People are not used to seeing it not stopping at the old limited stops anymore.”

Riders pay their fares in advance at terminals, then board the bus through any of its three doors. Inspectors check to make sure no one gets on without a ticket.

“I think it will be more efficient, less fumbling for the metro card at the fare box,” said MTA bus driver Noel Barrett.

Barrett expects to have anything but a smooth ride during Monday’s rush hour.

“It’s a new system,” he said. “There’s still a lot of kinks to be ironed out, and typically on Monday, it’s heavy delays.”

Some motorists expressed anger over the bus lanes taking away precious parking spots.

“People can’t park anymore,” said David Johnson, who was driving on Nostrand Avenue. “The street is already narrow. I think it was a bad idea.”

New B44 SBS Met w/ Confusion, Frustration By Riders (CBS)

Sunday’s debut of the new B44 Select Bus Service in Brooklyn is an attempt to cut down travel time along one of the city’s busiest routes, but some riders aren’t taking well to the change.

Transit workers were out talking to confused straphangers on Sunday to explain how the new B44 dedicated bus service works, 1010 WINS’ Roger Stern reported.

It’s the borough’s first dedicated-lane bus service.

Designed to speed entry onto the buses, riders are required to take the extra step of swiping their MetroCards at special terminals before getting on the bus. This is causing confusion and frustration for some commuters.

“It’s an inconvenience,” said one straphanger. It’s ridiculous.”

One bus driver said there have been some positive reactions.

“Some people are confused, but some people like it. It’s about 50-50,” he said.

Brooklyn's fastest bus route launched today with the debut of the new Select Bus Service on the B44 lines.

The new route extends more than 9 miles from Sheepshead Bay to Williamsburg. It follows the B44 route on Nostrand, Bedford and Rogers avenues, but makes fewer stops.

A special receipt is needed to get on the bus and the fare remains $2.50, or $1.50 for reduced fare.

The B44 bus still runs locally and the MTA says workers will be along the route Monday for the morning commute to help assist riders.

Store owners concerns on B44 SBS

Straphangers rejoice! The new B44 Select Bus Service has arrived.

The new ultra-rapid bus route will replace the B44 Limited Service beginning on Sunday, and will utilize the latest techniques in rapid transit to cut down travel times by an estimated 20-percent along one of the city’s most crowded routes, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The key to what will hopefully revolutionize the way 41,000 commuters get from Williamsburg to Sheepshead Bay lay in the 10 miles of dedicated bus lanes, which will pave a clear path for busses during rush hours on Nostrand and Bedford avenues.

Naturally, motorists are wary about the new lanes, and the prospect of getting ticketed for trespassing in the bus driver’s territory.

In fact, Sheepshead Bay’s Community Board 15 has been inundated with calls from motorists concerned over the new road rules associated with the bus lanes.

“The community board today got three phones calls about driving in the bus lane,” said CB15 chairwoman Theresa Scavo. “If you’ve got to park, you’ve got to go in the bus lane.”

The bus lanes themselves run alongside parking spots along Nostrand and Bedford Avenues and, while the lanes will not eat up any parking spots, motorists in some circumstances will have to pull into the bus lane in order to parallel park.

Some store owners along Nostrand Avenue have expressed concern regarding delivery trucks, which frequently double park where the bus-reserved lanes are now drawn in order to load and unload merchandise along the commercial strip. The trucks will likely become easy targets for police looking to hand out tickets, according to Pat Basile, owner of the Silver Star Meat Market.

“They’re painting the new lanes where the trucks make their deliveries,” said Basile. “The city’s looking to raise revenue.”

Aside from a quicker commute, straphangers are also going to have to get used to paying for the bus before they board — using terminals installed at the various bus bulbs that have been installed along the new route.

This should free up the bus driver to focus on driving, while another MTA employee checks passengers’ receipts, which they must retain after paying for their ride, or face a fine.

From the office of Council Member Jumaane Willimas

COUNCIL MEMBER WILLIAMS, RESIDENTS TO CALL ON MTA TO RESTORE LIMITED BUS STOPS ON THE B44 LINE

Removal of Stop, Part of MTA's New Select Bus Service, Has Disadvantaged Local Residents, Caused Significant Transit Time Increase for Working Class Commuters
BROOKLYN, NY- Council Member Jumaane D. Williams (D-Brooklyn) will join community members in calling on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to reverse its elimination of the limited bus stop on the B44 bus line. As part of its implementation of Select Bus Service (SBS), the MTA has eliminated several critical stops on the B44 line, which now travels directly from Nostrand Avenue and Avenue H, to Nostrand Avenue and Kings Highway, leaving a sizeable portion of the constituents of the 45th district without a limited bus option. Under the SBS, the B44 covers more than 9 miles from Williamsburg to Sheepshead Bay.

Many constituents in the 45th district have complained about losing the limited B44 bus stop at Avenue L and Nostrand Avenue. Further, students who attend I.S. 240 Andries Hudde Junior High School, at Nostrand Avenue between Avenues K and L, are also negatively impacted.

WHEN: Tuesday, November 19th 2013, 7AM.

WHO: Council Member Jumaane D. Williams (D-Brooklyn), Flatbush Residents

WHAT: Press Conference to Address the Restoration of Essential Limited Bus Stops on the B44 Line

WHERE: The limited bus stop on the B44 line at Avenue L and Nostrand Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11210

Many cities restrict deliveries to midnight to 6 AM. That is more inconvenient. A three hour restriction is not asking too much from the merchants. The Fulton Street Mall was conceived with all deliveries restricted to 7PM to 7AM. That's why the street was narrowed with delivery zones added. It was supposed to cut bus travel times. Because the merchants refused to abide with this project which took 17 years to plan, it turned out to be a waste. Instead of bees dodging cars, they now have to dodge delivery trucks at all hours in the bus lane so buses move no faster than before the mall.

I'm not convinced that an exclusive lane is necessary in Sheepshead Bay. I'm more concerned about the impact on traffic congestion than i am about deliveries, since there are no left turn lanes and you are not permitted to go around a car waiting for traffic to clear in order to make a left turn. Everyone must now wait. If traffic is heavy in the opposite direction, you may have to miss a light or two just to drive straight.

I've been saying that all along that traffic will be backed up especially north of Eastern Parkway on Nostrand and south of Eastern Parkway on Rogers during rush hours in the peak direction. They need to place more parking restrictions on neighboring avenues during rush hours to handle diverted traffic.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg made a stop in Brooklyn to test out the borough's first Select Bus Service.

The mayor caught a ride at Nostrand Avenue in Flatbush on the first weekday of the new B44 route, which promises a quicker trip between Sheepshead Bay and Williamsburg.

The line follows the normal B44 route on Nostrand, Bedford and Rogers avenues, but makes fewer stops. A special receipt is also needed to get on.

MTA workers say they're available to help commuters get adjusted to any changes.

MTA brought speedier bus service to a large stretch of Brooklyn Monday, but not everybody was happy about it.

You slide in your Metrocard, hold on to your receipt and hop on the bus from any entrance. Easy, right? Well, maybe not.

"I don't know how to use it," said one rider. "It wasn't explained properly."

The B44 Select Bus Service line made its weekday debut on Monday, the sixth SBS line in the city but the first in Brooklyn. So a little confusion among riders was to be expected along the nearly 10-mile route that stretches from Williamsburg to Sheepshead Bay.

"I guess you just follow the instructions," said one rider. "I guess if it makes it easier to take the bus, it's a plus."

The Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority rolled out the first Select Bus Service line in the Bronx in 2008. Four more have followed, including the Bx41 in the Bronx in July.

"We've had tremendous success with the SBS routes citywide, averaging 20 percent improvement in travel times, getting people where they need to go faster," said city Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan.

Even among the first-day confusion, riders said that they were looking forward to picking up the pace on a line that serves more than 40,000 commuters daily.

"It definitely works," said one person. "And it's simple. One, two three and it's on the bus."

There's still local service on the B44, which makes every stop on the route, but so-called limited service that was somewhere between local and select,is no more. That's bad news for those whose limited stops were eliminated. If they're too far from an SBS stop, it's local or nothing.

"What happens to places like this that had a limited stop, no longer have that stop?" said City Councilman Jumaane Williams of Brooklyn.

With Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio saying he'd like to boost the number of SBS lines, expect to start getting familiar with their quirks.

If you ask me, it's because you can't install a dedicated bus lane on New York Avenue without making it a one-way street between Farragut Road and ENY Avenue/Lincoln Road, but one could easily turn New York Avenue into a one-way street. However, north of Empire Boulevard, Rogers Avenue is much wider and the lights are better in sync. Would it make sense to run the B44 SBS on New York to Empire, then have it travel west on Empire to Rogers?

The biggest complaint I heard on Monday was from riders in Midwood, who used to use the Avenue L and Avenue R Limited stops. I didn't really see the northbound complaints.

I still don't like the idea of just showing the amount of stops away the bus is and not an ETA. It can be inaccurate, but 1 stop away could be pretty far out... MTA should consider finding a way to show an ETA like Clever Devices' product does or even better, both an ETA and # of stops away.

That is really stupid by MTA and NYCDOT, mostly they will have to restore the stops maybe in January?

They do, if they could borrow Cubic's Nextbus product that they use MTA BusTime to show ETA.

There's an app for iOS devices called CityMapper that translates the data into minutes. Seems to be pretty accurate.

You can actually access the MTA Bustime data through Nextbus on their site, complete with an ETA and everything.

Their bus planners are really not very good. The people who do subway planning are much more competent.

No. New York is very slow. They should leave it on Rogers, but add a new two way route partially on NY then move it to Brooklyn, then Albany past Holy Cross. The B49 should go straight up Ocean to Empire and make a right to Utica Avenue.

I don't know if I agree with that statement. The bus planners I have run into are pretty solid. Their issue is that they aren't taught to estimate revenue very well. This makes services that would be budget neutral (or close to that) look expensive. However, they are typically good on using meager resources to get stuff done.

Commuters want B44 stops restored to new SBS route (Avenue L stop)

The borough's first Select Bus Service is now rolling, but many commuters are demanding that several busy stops be restored to the new route.

Councilman Jumaane Williams is supporting some Flatbush residents who complain that the select service route knocks out critical stops along the B44 line, including one that’s just a block away from a school.

Commuters upset with the changes also complain that the select buses are nearly empty, while the local buses are jam-packed.

The route travels directly from Nostrand Avenue and Avenue H to Nostrand Avenue and Kings Highway, promising a quicker ride between Sheepshead Bay and Williamsburg.

Could it be the locals are jammed packed because they're late and the SBS is on time?
