This is a surprise and not shockingly when it was first announce to convert just one hybrid bus... BUT, really it should have never order die-brids or hy-shits in the first place! and NO, NYC Transit is not converting anything.... Only MTA Bus Company side.

From MTA's July Financial Plan 2014-2017... preliminary budget for 2014 huge ass document.
A brief description:
"MTA BC (MTA Bus Company) is revising its Shop Overhaul Plan to accommodate the conversion of its 389 hybrid electric bus fleet into cleaner and more cost efficient diesel energy.

This conversion would extend the life of these buses by at least three years and would enable MTA BC to defer purchasing new buses until the 2020–24 Capital Program, saving almost $200 million;"

Shop Plan - Hybrid fleet re-powering/conversion to diesel.

MTA Bus has a fleet of hybrid electric buses that are exhibiting a steep downward trend in MDBF and a significant level of component failures compared to other fleets, due to the higher speed of operation for these buses.

In 2012, the Board approved a procurement to convert one hybrid bus to clean diesel propulsion.

Based on the successful conversion, MTA Bus is seeking to convert the remaining 283 (Orion VII) hybrid buses placed in service in 2006 and 2007, as well as the remaining 105 (Orion VII Next Generation) hybrid buses in the MTA Bus fleet that were placed in service during 2009 and 2010.

The conversion will extend the useful life of all 389 buses by three years and will defer bus replacement expenses by almost $200 million from the 2015 - 2019 Capital Program to the 2020 - 2024 Capital Program for the 2006 and 2007 models.

The conversion cost is projected to be $19.1 million in 2015 and $19.7 million in 2016. The total cost of converting the entire MTA Bus hybrid fleet of 389 buses (including 105 buses placed in service during 2009 and 2010) is $52.0 million, but the net cost of the conversion will be $26.7 million, since there will be offsets from the elimination of budgeted cost for hybrid component replacement that will be avoided by fleet conversion.

These costs primarily represent vendor contract expenses.

Well, if I were them, I would only repower their Orion VII OG hybrids. They should send the NGs back to NYCT and them more 2006 and 2007 OG hybrids in exchange.

I know, I was just saying that MTA bus should send NYCT their 105 NG hybrids and in exchange, NYCT send Bus company 105 newer OG hybrids to repower as well. Wouldn't seem weird that when everything is eventually merged and their are 105 odd ball NG diesels that are not even in the same series?

They never should have boughr hybrids to begin with. I wonder how much if any research was done before they bought them or if they just did it because it was a GREEN thing. Now going to spend more money to convert to diesel.

WMATA seems to be doing well with their Hybrids. In fact, I believe they and Baltimore MTA are the only major TAs to be ordering new Hybrids at this time (WMATA's 654 new NABI BRT 42 order from the other day).

They are different then NY MTA in terms of maintenance and duty cycle.

and they waste a lot of time ignoring the study in early 2000s when hybrids can only perform well during heavy traffic conditions with regenerative breaking.

I don't believe they can transfer MTA Bus vehicles to NYCT if they were purchased with Federal funds.

What is the cost premium for a hybrid bus over a diesel? I've seen before estimated at approximately $150,000 per bus. If so, then buying these 390 buses as hybrids and now converting them to diesel ends up costing $110 million more than if they had just bought diesels in the first place.

If it's mta bus line not being ideal for a hybrid, why not swap their hybrids for NYCT's diesel buses? Give MTA bus all the diesel o5s and send the hybrids to CS and SI (or displace some NGs to SI).

Not that I liked those buses, but Manhattan's stop and go traffic is where the hybrids are better suited to run than in Queens where there isn't as much traffic outside of the major hubs like Flushing or Jamaica.

It'd be cheaper than converting a bunch of hybrids to diesels. If it made them feel better, then send the 'newer' rtss then. When it comes time to retire those diesel buses, then MTA bus can get their share of the new local bus order.
Spending the money to convert the buses is a waste, why not just buy new buses then?

How new is the RTS buses?

it is a waste of money but they are saving money but not maintaining the expensive hyshit equipment.

Why go through the expense since they have sufficient depots to handle the CNG buses and they have not proven to have the reliability issues that the Hybrids have had? If you look at cost and MPG, CNG is actually the lowest operating cost. The only thing holding it back is the expense of converting additional depots to handle CNG technology

The 3200s went to Staten Island for a while until the 4300s and 2200s went into service.

Why do I get the feeling that MTA Bus Company is having trouble maintaining the hybrid components? NYCT had a steep learning curve in the beginning to maintain the hybrids. Is MTA Bus having the same issues now?

I dunno...is it the type of hybrid technology (series vs parallel) that's really the issue here, where perhaps for MTA Bus they should've received parallel hybrid systems? It seems strange that there are so many issues with "high speed operation" for MTA yet other systems like WMATA, B-more MTA, and SEPTA have been ordering parallel hybrid buses for routes serving the entire service area, including suburban areas.

it was series drive. The study was conducted by MTA, FTA, EPA, and other people.

That was a temporary move involving a handful of buses. Moving 390 buses would be a different story.

As I explained in another post, you can't do that. The MTA Bus hybrids were purchased using Federal funds and must be used on these services. 'Regional Bus' may oversee both NYCT and MTAB operations, but the FTA considers them separate and it is highly unlikely that they would allow those newer buses to be shifted elsewhere for other services and replaced with older buses.

Repeating the same point over and over does not make it any more likely to happen. These buses belong to MTA Bus, not NYCT.

King County Metro is still receiving and will continue receiving hybrids, there's quite a number of Rapid Ride DE60LFRs to be delivered, in addition to XDE40s and XDE60s which should be coming either later this year or early next year. The only non-hybrid bus purchase Metro will undergo will be the New Flyer ETBs that they just awarded the contract for.

Couldn't the MTA get a gas supplier to build CNG fueling stations and then pay a little more for the gas?

In reality, no. CNG fueling facilities is very expensive to built.
