Why not just keep the Bx55 make the Bx55 a LOCAL route and the Bx15 LTD? This whole "Bx15 SHORT-TURN" is exactly like the Bx55. Whatever, it's the MTA.

This might be the first time in NYC Transit history where a full time booth was "permantely" moved to another area in the same station then "relocated" back to the original 24/7 location. The full time booth originally was at Kingsbridge (south side) Road.

I always thought the MTA should have dumped the Bx55 service once the line was hacked apart [losing the Yankee Stadium Branch, and cutting the segment between Fordham and Gun Hill Rd to weekdays only]. Merging the line with the Bx15 [and making the Manhattan trips LIMITED] makes a lot of sense.

However, one thing I would do to make it useful on the northern end is to extend it by about half-a-mile to Fordham and Valentine...and then re-assign the Bx15 to Kingsbridge, using Kingsbridge Road to deadhead. (The Bx9 would go to West Farms Depot in return.) The savings would be in reduced deadhead time for both routes, as the Bx9 would have a 1-minute run-off and a 3-minute run-on and the Bx15 would not have to use Fordham Road and Southern Boulevard to deadhead. In addition, route reliefs would occur with empty buses at the terminal.

(The Bx9's deadhead is currently short, but it requires a mid-route cut in and cut-out.)

Hopefully they end up running the Bx15 Limited all times except late nights instead of the weekday only proposal.

Many of us 40 and over NY'ers can remember the Bx55 from the beginning. It was the BX-55X and it had that "special" status over other routes. Kingsbridge always assigned it's newest buses to the BX-55 and of course, it was the "Express".

It's funny that they're now looking speed up bus service along this corridor. In those early days the BX-55 always made good time along Webster, Third Ave (n/b), Washington Ave (s/b) and 161st Street. Even the old BX-29 (now Bx15) made decent time. Once Third Ave was converted back to two-way traffic flow, the BX-55 become the slow route that it is today.

I'd have to disagree with most of this.

The Bx9 has a few short turns in both directions, run it out of WF and you lose the usefulness of all of the short terminals sans Fordham Plaza/Crotona which really isn't a good place to short turn buses and you'd have 9's deadheading via fordham/southern instead of 15's [so that defeats the reason you gave for the swap].

All of those runs can't go to 262 because it'll have too much service up there, 242 can't turn buses with ease N/B and it wouldn't make sense to have them turn s/b and you don't need buses clogging b'way in a conga line anymore than it already is. At 225 buses either have to go to a depot or go to Riverdale which as I already stated won't work. You can't turn buses without looping around Marble Hill projects [which is impractical because you'd have to move stops for full access to River Plaza and the train in both directions].

You wouldn't be able to switch operators there and now there's a long deadhead back to WF, unless all the runs are starting and ending at WF SQ which would screw up reliability on the north end. As it stands, and someone can correct if I'm wrong, I don't believe there are that many runs deadheading from KB to WF SQ. I'm not understanding why you think the mid-route cut in/out needs to go.

I agree that KB would have to get some of the 15 runs because that's too much for WF to handle [basically the 55 runs] but extending it up Fordham is asking for trouble. Besides the traffic issue, once again where is it turning at? the 22/34 stop is full, you could end it by the 28 but thats not Fordham Center and requires looping up to Kingsbridge, and you can't end it on the Concourse. KB can easily deadhead whatever 15 runs they get the same way they currently do the 41/55 without extending it.

Also isn't MCH supposed to open this year? I haven't been by there in a while but they might want to just hold off and do another swap of Bx routes just to even things out.

The reason that the full time booth was moved to 196 St. entrance was because of the higher-crime at the Kingsbridge Rd. entrance.

It wouldn't be bad if they didn't eliminate the segment to Gun Hill Rd. The ridership would be much higher if the frequency between buses wasn't as bad as it currently is!

They need to convery 3 Ave. back to one-way operation and utilize Washington Ave. to southbound service. It would speed up service tremendously!

Agreed. In those days of one-way traffic flow on Third Ave with s/b trips via Washington Ave, even the Bx-29 moved along at a decent pace.

The conversion back to two-way flow on Third Ave killed the Bx55 (Bx29). Slow them to a crawl. I wish someone at the TA and DOT would look back and realistically consider why the service along Third Ave is so slow.

That is now impossible, as development caused Washington Avenue to be partially de-mapped south of 161/163.

They can still do the 3rd Ave/Washington Street one way between 184 and 163. It would help.

I drove down Washington Street, from 3rd Ave/184 to 163 - - I stopped at only two traffic signals and experienced no backups - - at 9 AM on a Monday morning. That shows why backroads are the best way to go around rush hour traffic. I even go through neighboring streets just to avoid Granville Payne in Brooklyn.

[It was the BX-55X and it had that "special" status over other routes.]

As I recall, the T.W.U. filed a grievance to prevent the Bx55 from being "demoted" to just another bus line as part of the 1997 MetroCard transfer roll-out.

[Why not just keep the Bx55 make the Bx55 a LOCAL route and the Bx15 LTD?]

Why is it so essential that the 3rd Avenue locals and limiteds use different numbers and run from different depots?
