You wait for a bus in the beating sun and when it finally arrives, you have to pack in like a sardine. But B1 riders say that the MTA is adding insult to injury when passengers sneak on the packed-to-the-gills bus via the back door, unbeknownst to drivers without paying a fare because there is simply no room to board the bus properly. "I think it’s disgusting," said Samantha August, who lives in Gravesend but works in Bay Ridge. "I understand why people may sneak on, but if the MTA put more buses on the B1 line, it would definitely decrease the amount of people who did that. I've waited 40 minutes so far for the bus." Kathy D. of Bensonhurst said, "That would really annoy me to see someone sneak on for free for a bus I paid for." "I haven't noticed that happen, but if I saw it, I would definitely be mad," commented Sergei Deko of Bath Beach. During a recent round-table meeting hosted by Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis, MTA board member Allen Cappelli said that the agency loses $10 million a year in fare evasion. In these cases, he contended that the drivers were "errant." Malliotakis had noted at the time that there has been talk of injecting $5 to $6 million into the MTA budget to put undercover officers on buses to stop fare beaters on problematic routes. Alan Saly, a spokesperson for the Transport Workers Union – who joined Assemblymember Bill Colton’s petition to bring back the B64 to Coney Island – said that the union does not condone the practice. "We believe everybody should pay their fare; there is no doubt about that," he told this paper, noting that in many cases, drivers are unaware of those sneaking in. Who is this idiot? 1: Drivers always know when people board via the rear doors, and 2: They are NOT supposed to tell anybody to pay the fare. They are instructed to "remind" the intending passenger of the proper fare payment.

If there is a crowd of folks at the front he/she probably can't see what is going on in the back ... A-N-D ... how is he/she suppose to "remind" those getting on in the back if the bus is THAT crowded ? Granted if the bus isn't that crowded he/she can say something over the speaker or "remind" folks boarding to pay their fare.

Had you driven a bus, you would know that.

I believe he did it intentionally since no one got off. There were about 75 people at the bus stop and no other bus in sight. About 20 got on. What is someone supposed to do under those conditions? Everyone was coming from the subway so no money was lost. They really need a dispatcher there in the mornings to officially allow rear door boarding.

Normally he is there from about 7 till at least after 9. He is able to stagger the buses so if one gets crowded there is at least one or two behind them(did see 6 in a row on Thursday towards KCC).

I DID have a FEW try to sneak on my bus without a ticket a few times..of course we do head counts..so..I walked through my bus..asked for a "show receipt stubs" call..[I knew who gave me a ticket by face..you HAVE TO.] The guilty parties ALWAYS had some excuse..but they ALWAYS found themselves back in the terminal...and ONCE in handcuffs[dude had a warrant,AND contraband in his bag]

Posted by AMoreira81* on Sat Sep 15 11:11:55 2012, in response to Re: B1 bus riders say some are not getting a fare ride, posted by BrooklynBus on Fri Sep 14 09:55:39 2012.* edf40wrjww2msgDetailB:detailStr fiogf49gjkf0d Yesterday on the M60, traffic was so badly backed up that when an M60 bus finally arrived (it was an articulated bus), the dispatcher closest to the 126 Street Depot ordered the driver to open the rear doors so that people waiting for 30 minutes or more could get on just to clear the stop since the next buses would be crush-loaded too (this bus had earlier been "put in place" to alleviate the crowds no avail---it took about 40 minutes to get from 5 Avenue to 2 Avenue).
