I wound up catching a 190X trip on NJ Transit today and i'm wondering how this line makes the money with the jittney competition in passaic. the jittneys says Patterson-NY so do they follow the 190 the whole trip? And what does NJ Transit do to try not to have the jittneys take aways the passangers from a line? i'm thinking NJTransit run #156 also has this.

NJ Transit #74-#1304-NOVABUS
NJ Transit #190X-#8205-MCI

Contrary to popular belief, the jitneys do NJT a favor - they provide the excess capacity that they cannot.

The 190 and 156 (159 also) print money - basically they are money makers because of the areas they serve, which justifies the frequency. Sure, they could carry a few more people, but to take everyone off those jitneys and put them on a NJT bus means leaving people on the street.

NJT simply does not have the resources to do it all - even mgmt. has said this previously.

IINM, the jitneys follow the 190 from Paterson to Clifton to Passaic, but then I believe they take route 21 and/or route 3 to Union City, then to the PABT. The 190 goes through Rutherford and Secaucus. The 156/159 deal is slightly different as the 156/159 buses run from Fort Lee through Cliffside Park, Palisade Park, North Bergen, West New York, and Union City to the PABT, while the jitneys continue to Newport Mall and Journal Square, starting from the GWB Terminal instead of Fort Lee.

They would if they a bit more capable with their dollars. A great deal of these bus routes used to be privately run, remember.

There was a time before the jitneys that the 84 on Bergenline was running every 5 to 6 minutes, I remember some of the veterans at Meadowlands told me when I was a B/O. With the vast amount of people that Bergenline has, the Jitney buses are, even though I do not like them, a help. Without them, every 84, 156, 159, and 181 would be so packed, you would think you are in a human sardine can.

As for the 190, the reason that line makes revenue is due to the Rutherford passengers. Sure, the bus makes profit on the 190X starting in Passaic to Paterson, but the 190 Rutherford Express buses are almost like the 128 in the morning.....ALMOST. I did the 190X NY from Rutherford a few times and that bus was always full, even with standees.

Metrolinecoach111 is right, sadly, that NJT does not have the resources that it really needs to service everyone, which is a good thing in a way because if the Jitney buses was to go BYE BYE, oy. Just Oy. NJT would have to find ways to get new buses, hire employees, train them, and get them on the road immediately. That costs a ton of money. The training alone costs a few grand compared to a driving school where NJT pays you $10 a hour during training. Buses cost between $350K to $500K a pop (The CNG MCI's at Howell were $450K or $490K IIRC, while the Neo's cost $460K). That means fares will go UP because someone has to pay for this and we all know how NJT is tight now with money, especially while Christie is in office. That's why I so wish Corzine was still there but it is done.

I regularly take the 190 from Rutherford. There is no other service in many of the areas where the 190 runs, and no competition from jitneys on the Rutherford side of the river.

The private companies most notably, Public Service Coordinated Transport (bulk of what is now NJT bus), went bankrupt. Remember?

Nobody mentioned the 190 (former Inter city) took up the slack when the
Erie Mainline was taken up through Clifton, Passaic and the west end of Rutherford (Carlton Hill). There are more people riding now than in the 1960's. Am I the oldest one on this Board?!?!?

I have a Maplewood Equipment Company #30 timetable (the 190's predecessor) from 1976 or so and it shows a significantly lower level of service than exists today.

The level of service on the 190 is quite outstanding; every 15-20 minutes throughout the day off peak and into the late evening (including weekends) with 30-60 minute overnight service. Really can't beat that.
