Really, now, should this bus have gone out?

Not to get anyone into trouble, and I don't know a whole lot about bus
maintenance, but here it is, sprawled over the front windshield. Seems a warning, to me at least.

There is no way that should be DRIVEN, never mind run in service! That writing is obscuring the B/Os vision!
The bus might have been fixed on the overnight, but should NOT have been let out like that!

That to me is on the yard dispatcher, who should have known better.

No, it's on the bus driver who should have informed the yard dispatcher before pulling out. The yard SLD doesn't inspect buses and has no idea what's going on with details such as these.

Yes, but the point is the scribble on the writing on the windshield reduces visibility for the b/o. He should have not left the depot with the bus in that condition.

Doesn't look like a problem to me, as long as the Stop Engine light was in the operator's hand.

Hey b/o: you know that (pending) AVA you asked for?

If you'd do me a favor and take this bus out, making an on time pullout, your AVA is granted!

An AVA is a contractual right, not a granted privilege, and is further governed differently from location to location. See the 1994 MOU attachments. A better analogy might be:

If you'd do me a favor and take this bus out, making an on time pullout, I'll make sure you have a good bus for the rest of the month.

Or something similar. Or even something indicating he won't break chops with uniform, newspaper or other trivial non-transportation violations.

Bronx division tend to do sloppy things like this.

Depending on the depot some maintenance managers want heavy duty out of services to have shoe polish writing like this on the bus so it doesn't go out by mistake. Last year a maintenance superintendent got demoted for releasing a bus that had a major fuel line problem out the door and within a few blocks from the depot the line busted and fuel spilled all over the street and the bus had to be towed back in to the house.

The major issue was that the super failed to shoe polish the window on the bus. Normally we use papers that say HOLD and when the operator is assigned the bus he is required to bring the hold paper back the yard dispatcher and verify the bus is OK for service.

When working the yard you have between 50-100 pullouts in the rush, you don't know ever buses status especially when they are released from the maintenance department on the fly. In this situation the bus was released for service but no one wanted to wash off the the polish. Either the operator didn't care, or he told the yard dispatcher and he didn't care or maintenance didn't care the bus went out that way.

Someone should have said no and it won't go till its cleaned off.

If that's the case the B/O has no business "briving a dus"*.

Both the B/O AND the dispatcher should be written up.
1) The dispatcher should nolt send AMY bus out with any writing obscuring the B/O vision (whether it was repaired or not)
2) The B/O should refuse to take ANY bus out with his/her vision obscured, and should also verify that this bus was indeed repaired, then have the windshield cleaned before even moving said bus!

Is the writing in the driver's line of vision? It looks to me like it is below eye level.

It looks like someone tried to clean the writing off and it smeared. What did they write with? Crayola makes window crayons that wash right off.

They use white shoe polish.

It doesn't come off easy, got to use a lot of elbow grease.

Maintenance may be complicit as well because in the rush they probably told the yard dispatcher they had no one to clean off the polish.
I wouldn't have let the bus go out no matter what service needs were pressing.
It makes the MTA look bad and in Manhattan divisiion it wouldn't have happened.
When I had the QC in 2008 I held buses if they had an unpainted replacement part or grafitti.
