MABSTOA now 50 Years Old

March 23, 1962 saw the first MABSTOA buses on NYC streets, after the City seized the buses and garages from Fifth Avenue Coach and Surface Transit. That day, a Friday, was the first day the new NYCTA subsidiary MABSTOA operated buses. By the following week, ther was normal service on virtually all Manhattan and Bronx routes except for the #2 (5th-7th Aves., today's M2), and the #6 (72nd Street Crosstown, part of which survived as the M30 till a few years ago but is now gone completely). Fifty years later MABSTOA still exists on paper but its operations have been integrated with the rest of the NYCTA's operations.

There is still a separate MaBTOA payroll which the MTA uses create and fill positions it can't create under NYCT. For the office workers getting a MaBSTOA title, they do all MTA work, not only for MaBSTOA. Practically the only difference is that their pension is paid out of farebox revenues. The MTA still hasn't been able to solve all the legal problems for MaBSTOA to completely disappear.

Growing up with MABSTOA, I was saddened in the early 80s when they stopped putting MABSTOA decals on OA buses. I got used to the NYCTA decals, but this current crap of MTA-NYCT and labelling the equipment MTA-New York City Bus & MTA-New York City Subway... (shaking my head).

The M30... haven't thought of that route since I last worked it back in... 1995/1996 before I left OA and went to Brooklyn. That was a sweet piece of work.

I was among the group of TA tested, but called by OA, then onto TA losing time and service, though they said we wouldn't lose anything :-)

One thing about OA, they put you in place. Unlike the TA where they let you flounder about without care or concern. Reason there is, they want those Manhattan buses where they're scheduled to be. Brooklyn and Queens? Pffft! Get a late slip!

Back in the days when FFS was still open, I remember that I often saw older B/Os on the M30. I bet they lined up to grab those runs.

There weren't many of those runs; I don't remember the exact number, perhaps 6 or so. I filled in for a fellow named Alvin, a tall, balding man who wore glasses and was very well liked by his people.

Those were the highest seniority runs I recall. Probably first outside drilling or any other non-revenue thing.

Yup. The M-30 was one of the few lines that went North-South-East-AND West, all in the same trip!

Anyone want to buy a bus company?

The purpose of said subsidiary corporation shall be to operate, pursuant to the powers conferred hereunder and for a temporary period, the omnibus lines hereafter acquired by the city, until the said omnibus lines shall be sold or otherwise disposed of to private or public operation.

As I recall, it was a bingo and paid something around 66 hours per week with a vehicle time of something in the neighborhood of 5 hours, give or take. The M72 was another nice piece. They were both high seniority routes.

Me? I spent most of my time on the M3, M4, M5, M10 and M11. Could only grab one of the above from the list, and even then pickins were few and far between.
