Bayonne slams Red & Tan Bus Co. for announcing it won’t operate #10 bus route after 4/8

Saying the No. 10 bus is a money-loser, the Red & Tan Bus Co. announced last week that it will stop operating the bus route on April 8. The bus runs along Kennedy Boulevard between West Third Street in Bayonne and Journal Square.

Formerly a profitable route, the No. 10 bus line, the only bus route Red & Tan still operates in Hudson County, has become a drain on the company, Jim Rutherford, general manager for Red & Tan, said. He cited the downturn in the economy and competition from jitney vans as factors that led to the decision to drop the route.

Bayonne Mayor Mark Smith issued a statement demanding the company keep operating the route until alternative solutions are arrived at. Rutherford said his April 8 date is firm.

“Many Bayonne people depend on this bus route to get to work or to school at Bayonne High School, Marist, and Holy Family Academy,” Smith said in the press release.

“Red & Tan’s decision to suddenly and deliberately cease operations without adequate advance notice is unprofessional and disrespectful to the people who have been their customers for many years.”

Smith also argued that Red & Tan, whose parent is Coach USA, is in violation of a state law that requires bus companies to give local governments 45 days notice if they plan to stop operating a route. Smith said that a letter was delivered to his office from Red & Tan about its decision on Wednesday.

NJ Transit officials couldn’t immediately say if Smith was correct.

But NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder said alternative transportation options for No. 10 riders are being discussed.

“We are aware of the plans to discontinue service and discussions are ongoing with local officials and the community regarding potential options, if any,” Snyder said.

[Bayonne Mayor Mark Smith issued a statement demanding the company keep operating the route until alternative solutions are arrived at.]

Does Bayonne have a law requiring businesses to operate at a loss? Is the Mayor willing to use city money to cover the company's losses?

If Bayonne is letting jitneys skim off Red & Tan's riders, they should not be surprised at all that the situation has reached this point.

It will be a good thing in the long run getting them out of Hudson county. At one time they were the flagship bus company in the county. Now just a joke that's not funny anymore. Bring on Academy or A & C bus company.

They print money on the run because of the premiums they can charge.

Why penny pinch and go to the yield when you can command a fare about 15% above the operating cost?

I predict that, within the next 2-3 years, you'll see Coach USA slowly phase out of the ONE Bus operations with Academy the likely candidate to take those routes over. Not necessarily saying that it will happen, but that's the most likely long-term scenario.

I rode the whole line PM from Bayonne on Wed. and it had a nice amount of people and some turnover. I only noticed 1 student farebeater. The buses toward Bayonne ran frequently and often enough. No signs were posted of the elimination of the route.
It is also a very straight route.

Why Academy though for ONE Bus where there's Ironbound, Orange, Big Tree, and Hilton garages so close to each other?

This might sound OUT THERE but you know since CUSA is pretty much RIP with R&T & ONE bus soon, wouldn't it be easier if NJT make a new Central Division garage for ONE Bus Routes and R&T routes, especially since the 10 is on Academy's bus lineup until the Fall?

And, since CUSA is been crappy with R&T and ONE, why do I have a feeling that Community Coach is next? I think back in the late 80's, early 90's, the 700 lines that is at CC was at either Madison Ave or Market Street in Paterson when I lived there. But, again, I think...... What's going on with CUSA? Are they bankrupt or something?

I am not totally sure, but I am going to keep an eye on that sector. The 77 might fit our portfolio and I do not want it hacked to death. I suspect that NJT would let it go if DeCamp didn't want it. NJT wants to preserve local bus service at all costs and they were made aware that numerous independent lines were in trouble. I'll have to study ONE Bus to determine if I want to get involved. It seems that Academy is not getting a subsidy for the 119, but is receiving for the 10.

The 77 parallels the Morris and Essex in East Orange and Orange, as well as passing right by the Morristown station, but it also serves several towns with no rail service, such as Livingston, East Hanover, Whippany and West Orange.

I believe the 77 has more potential if it carried locally. It would provide direct service from the Oranges and Livingston to Morristown.

It would complement the 73 along Northfield, Livingston and Mt. Pleasant Avenues; would complement the 73 and 872 along Route 10; and provide the only service along Columbia Turnpike (though admittedly even to this day not a whole lot of development has occurred along that stretch). It would also be an alternative/complement to the Morris and Essex.

If NJT hadn't allowed the Morristown & Erie to get ripped out west of Great Notch, it could have served Whippany by rail. They were equally neglectful with the former Erie Orange Branch, which they could have connected to the Morris & Essex just south of West Orange.

I believe the 77 has more potential if it carried locally

Sure, potential to have its average speed slowed down a great deal. If there are parallel local bus routes, NJT doesn't want them competed with anyhow; only if they start running the 77 themselves would they do such a thing.

No argument there.

What about in Bergen County, where Rockland Coaches 11A competes with the 165; 20 competes with the 166; 14/84 (before it was brutalized) competes with the 178/186 between Englewood and the GWBBS?

NJ Transit also has the option of [re]extending the 73 out to Morristown if they had the means to.

Yes I know, Rockland Coaches massacred many of their routes. The 11A used to run twice per hour, with hourly service to West Haverstraw and Spring Valley. Now its hourly on the main route and bi-hourly on the branches. The 11C was also cut to bi-hourly. The 14 and 84 were reduced to a few weekday trips from 7-day a week service, and no more service to River Vale and Westwood.

I'm sure there's more less...
