The B74 is needed even though the jittney cars compete for fares as well on Mermaid Avenue. It's needed because the B36 can't handle the load on it's own. Remember, the B36 starting from Nostrand Avenue and Avenue U. If it winds up being late before getting to Coney Island it winds up being SRO and is filled. B74 was cut in 1978 and reinstated 6 months later. The service is good and there is a dispatcher at Coney Island who keeps the B74 buses moving. There is also on occasion a spare UP bus there that is used if needed. |

Mermaid Avenue residents fight the MTA anytime they indicate that it will get the axe and IINM the B74 is actually one of the few routes that make a profit. You want to eliminate waste? How about the B13 down Gates Avenue or B20 north of the Junction? |

Um no, the B13 gets plenty of riders for it's slow schedule. Plenty of people ride it to Myrtle/Wyckoff. Most of the Q67 is what I would consider waste. |

It actually doesn't make a profit because most people are transferring to/from the subway. In response to DaRidgewoodBusBuff, if there are heavy crowds west of Stillwell Avenue, what good would splitting the B36 do? You'd still need to have short-turn buses (because of the heavier loads west of Stillwell), so you might as well keep them as B74s. Plus, they help with the unreliability issues on the B36. You could have serious crowding if the B36 is delayed coming from Sheepshead Bay. |

The route path of the B13 in Ridgewood makes no sense since the present route of the B13 travels in a northerly direction along Fresh Pond Road than in a southerly direction along Gates Avenue to the Ridgewood Terminal. I would recommend that NYCT extend the B52 route to Fresh Pond Road/67th Avenue via Gates Avenue, Forest Avenue etc.(current B13 Routing)to serve the Gates Avenue corridor presently served by the B13 route. I would also recommend that NYCT reroute the B13 at Cooper Avenue/Cypress Avenue to the Ridgewood Terminal via Cypress Avenue to provide needed bus service to Cypress Avenue for former B18 riders. I would provide three legged transfers between the B13 and B20 routes to provide one fare access to/from Fresh Pond Road for B13 customers and three lergged transfers between the B13 route and the B52 route for Gates Avenue B13 passengers. |

Hell no, I'm glad MTA choose the B13 path instead of the B18 one mainly because it benefits me so I could care less about those "other" people on Cypress Ave. let their asses walk to the (L) train or Q55, I'm very close to Cypress Hills st and Cooper Ave, and the B13 makes a great secondary route to get to Myrtle/Wyckoff because the Q55 has a lot of problems. I would hate to walk up that hill for the old B18 path.If MTA want to revive that B18 portion then combine it with the Q39, but I know that will never happen. |

Posted by North-Easten T/O on Mon Sep 5 09:32:38 2011, in response to B74 observations, posted by DaRidgewoodBusBuff on Sun Sep 4 18:06:52 2011. I worked the B74 on Saturdays back in 1995-1996. There was only 1 bus out most of the day. I had Run#1. I made a trip out of Stillwell every 20mins and the trip it self was 16mins long. The fare was only $0.75 when I start but went up to $0.90 when the fare went up to I think $1.25, you only paid the full fare if you wanted a transfer and it was only good on the B64. I got 6 books of Blue transfers only since we did not need other. I was lucky to carry 10 people each trip. When Run#2 came out I went to lunch for 2 hours. When I came back we both were on line making trips every 12mins out of stillwell for about an hour and a 1/2. He went out to a short lunch and when he came back I went home. MY job paid 9:45 or so. All the other weekends jobs only paid 8 hours, Sunday there was only one bus out at all time. Now after then Free Transfers to the Subway was started I pick the job again and that pick I was packed every dame trip. The next pick is when they added more weekend buses and I could not even touch it. |

It's purpose is to take passengers via Mermaid Avenue to the station and back. The B42 is to take passangers along Rockaway Parkway to the station. It doesn't need to go to Coney Island Hospital. |

To that end, I would actually reroute the Q39 to Broadway Junction, running via Decatur and Summerfield Streets, and following the B20 to Broadway Junction. The Q39 would then be reassigned to East New York Depot. |

Posted by BrooklynBus on Mon Sep 5 19:58:52 2011, in response to Re: B74 observations, posted by AMoreira81 on Sun Sep 4 22:40:15 2011. In the early 1980s it was extended along Brighton Beach Avenue every 20 minutes to Corbin Place as the B74SS Shoppers Special, because shopping opportunities were very limited in Coney Island.I've always thought it should be extended and also some trips of the B42 to make them more useful. If the B36 is not overcrowded to Coney Island Hospital, it wouldn't make sense to send it there. It should go somewhere you can't get to now. If it went to Brighton Beach, you wouldn't have to take the B36 up to Neptune and back down to get to Kingsborough CC. Last year DOT proposed extending the B74 along Neptune to Kingsborough. Manhattan Beach went nuts when they heard that. I think it was a dumb proposal because it bypassed subway stops on the Brighton Line. |

I didn't suggest rerouting the B13 at Cypress Avenue/Cypress Hills Street (entire former B18 route) but only rerouting the B13 route west of Cypress Hills Street/Cooper Avenue. Under this idea the B13 would be rerouted west of Cooper Avenue/Cypress Hills Street to travel along Cooper Avenue to Cypress Avenue than travel to the Myrtle Avenue/Wyckoff Avenue Subway Station (via Cypress Avenue west of Cooper Avenue) so it would still serve Cypress Hills Street at Cooper Avenue but it would be a faster ride for you to get the Myrtle Avenue/Wyckoff Avenue Subway Station. To serve Cypress Avenue south of Cooper Avenue the Q39 route could be extended to Jamaica Avenue/Cresecent Street via Cooper Avenue, Cypress Avenue(east of Cooper Avenue) and than Cypress Hills Street. |

Sounds good to me to if it turns on CIA to the Brighton Station and then to KCC. They could send every other B74 at times. It wouldn't even cost that much because they could use the B1s that currently turn at Ocean Parkway when school is open. |
