Orion VII "NG" Body Damaged Fleet

I can't help but notice there is an ever increasing # of Orion VII NG's with body damage, especially to the left side. Some of these buses are only weeks and months old. Most notibly are the Kingsbridge fleet, with 4400, 4404, Stengal, 4175 just to mention a few, i spotted in a matter of 5 minutes this afternoon.

Is the the quality of the material Orion is using, or are operators just having more incidents. I know in staten island at least 30% of the new fleet has some damage, most notibly to the left rear of bus.

The MTA cannot let this happen to its newest buses, but something tells me its more than the drivers. It must be something with the design of the rear, maybe pertruding out more? I don't know, all I know is the number of times I have to get a bus signed off for damage is drastically growing.

I highly doubt Orion would use a cheaper material as the side panels have to be rated at a certain level (crash worthiness) and also the fact that there is no "different" material to use - it's either Aluminum and fiberglass in one thickness - changing that would likely mean some design issues.

However, yes I notice the NG's do protrude a bit more at the rear, maybe that does have a impact on the situation you describe.

Out of curiosity, what does this "body damage" look like?

I lot of "popped" panels on the sides below the blue stripe, numberous large scrapes/dents around left rear lights and corner moldings. Also alot of the left sides, where there is black below the rear windows have "pings/ bullet looking marks lol". I'll try to get some pics tommorow in the depot.

I think that operators are just sloppy and faster buses eat them. SI MCIs tend to have a fair amount of damage as well for that reason. I notice that a lot of private companies have the same problem with regards to faster, more powerful buses getting more damage.

Frankly, the MTA needs to go with DriveCam in every bus and solve that issue. I am certain that stimulus funds can be procured for that.

I’m going to concur that it’s quite likely a driver issue. As a long-time observer of Boston’s MBTA, I’ve seen numerous examples of a certain bus model receiving repetitive damage at one garage while the same buses at another garage exhibit little of the same damage.

That sounds like bad locations those buses from that garage were going. If they are getting damage often. Like in Staten Island when the buses were bottoming out and such.

This is only 3 pics of so many i could post all with similiar areas of damage. Without too much detail 4 out every 10 buses in Yukon and Castleton have damage here, and Kingsbridge is not far behind.

Looks like swing out damage from turning right while too close on the left to something like a garage door frame. We get "stripes" like that at the PABT from parking too close to the guard rails and bumpers that protect the walls.

The damage on the MBTA buses is always in the rear sides of the buses, suggesting that the drivers aren't clearing the rear end and are hitting some sort of object.
