There's no need to tie together the use of one branch or the other in Orange to the use of a "matching" branch in Elizabeth. For the most part, all the traffic on route 24 turns over in Newark, and there's no real connection between the Orange service and the Elizabeth service. Service allocation along each of the branches in Orange and Elizabeth should be independently, based on traffic conditions within each of the two cities.If NJT wants to use suffixes to help define route paths, then perhaps it would be best for it to use two letters, one for each of Orange and Elizabeth. For example, from Orange to Elizabeth use suffixes SE, SJ, HE, and HJ; and from Elizabeth to Orange use suffixes ES, EH, JS, and JH (if any trips were to short-turn in Newark, then use only a single letter suffix). |
