Don't remind me of SCRTD and the Grummans. They were pulled and were out for like 6 months. I was affected, as my home route was out of one of the divisions that used Grummans (Division 5, then South Central Division, now Arthur Winston/Mid-Cities Division). They did have 8V71, at least until the spring of 1984, when RTD reengined them w/ 6V92 :( I never forgave RTD for that.

Santa Monica had some 870s from late 1979 w/ 8V71. Interestingly, they had a followup order in the spring of 1981 which had 6V92. I was in NYC for a few days in August 1980 and I saw (but did not ride) the Grummans, and I remember they had 6V92 (or at least 6-cylinder). earlier that month I was in Champaign/Urbana, IL, and their Grummans were 8V71. My last experience riding Grummans was in Honolulu in the summer of 1990, those had 8V71. it was nice to hear that engine again years after RTD screwed me. RTD's Grummans were dead to me by then, but they were on the way out. They sold 9 of them to my home agency, Gardena Municipal Bus Lines, which used them solely on their school "commuter" lines, replacing their last Fishbowls. RTD (actually it was LACMTA by then) got rid of the last Grummans in the summer of 1993, Gardena ran theirs until mid-1995, when they got 14 Nova RTS-06, and then moved their 1988 Flxible Metros to the school commuter service. Not sure why, as they were still running 1981 and 1983 RTS-04s (maybe they wanted a front w/c lift for the school service).
