NYCTA's 870s probably would've been better suited for the 6V92, but unfortunately they went with 6V71 engine. I think NYCTA culture was all about the "savings" of the lesser engine. I put savings in quotes because is it really that if it gives you an underpowered bus? Their first RTS order in '81 also had the 6V71 (but 50 buses were 6V92 equipped). Interesting enough they went the 6V92 for their '82 RTS, and back to the 6V71 in '83, for some odd reason. After '83 they went back to the 6V92 until it was being phased out in favor of the Series 50.

I agree with you that the 8V71 was a very nice sounding engine, especially in a Grumman 870. I was never a big RTS, but I always enjoyed them when equipped with the 6V92.
