Actually we live in a republic (...and to the Republic for which it stands...). The big difference is that a republic is designed to protect the rights of the minority groups within, while a democracy might do that but might also just have the majority rule. The reason this is important to this discussion is because you're saying that the majority of road users should dictate how the road is used (make it a runway with no trees and asphalt as far as the eye can see! How many lanes can we fit in if we get rid of the medians and a lane of parking?) but because we live in a republic, the elected officials (in this case DeBlas) decide to override majority use and instead promote the increased use by a minority (in this case transit users). Welcome to the Republic. |
