Thanks for answering. I certainly remember that TA and later MABSTOA transfers had a large date on the front so there was no question as to their validity. The privates, on the other hand, always seemed to use some kind of secret code.

As you no doubt recall the last few years prior to MetroCards the privates and TA/MABSTOA all issued the same style transfers with dates and tear-off time limits that permitted transfers to every possible intersecting bus, regardless of the operator. For example, a rider on the M15 could transfer free to the Q60 at 60th Street and 2nd Ave.
