Knowing your ties to Troy Division, it's good to see someone who knows what they're doing take a stand on said annoying poster:). As for other news.* Consolidating all 9900's in Albany Division is the Upstate equal to LIB putting the 400's at Rockville Centre. The soft-seats a) were MADE for the 55/Express routes and b) as it is are in need of some TLC and soon seeing that some are falling apart. 9959 with its decrepit seats and 3008 with its marker grafitti are in grave need, among others. Also consider that the 55 with it's crunch loads is totally unsuitable for O6's; heck, at times it seems that artics would be the only solution for it (and the 11 and 86 when school is in session). * I thought a few more NABI's have been repainted besides the ones that you mention, I think I've seen about 5 with the far better new scheme. I take it the next overhauls are the As for new big buses, I was going through some back issues of the Capital District Business Review and have found some items of interest (for those without bizjournals.com accounts, registration is free and short) that makes me skeptical of the information you gave even though your ties there are stronger than any article. October 2001: CDTA forges an 8-bus contract with Orion for full-sized buses. Setember 2002:: CDTA gets $4.4 million for 9 "high-capicity buses" for Route 5 corridor. December 2002: CDTA gets $2 million for buses (though this just as much could have been for the Elf buses for STAR/International cutaways for ShuttleFly that are also LED sign tests...by the way, do the blind have trouble seeing them;). February 2003: $2.7 million for new buses and facilities, again internal overhauls and possibly part of it went towards the cutaways in comparision to the above. I understand it takes time for bus orders, but looking at the age of some of these items has me feeling skeptical. Is CDTA hording bus funding for 2008 (when the earliest O6's hit retirement) or another time? Is something else at play in which funding for buses that has existed for years is going unused? Given that the O1's still haven't been replaced (nor have the lost O6's and LFS's) and parts of the fleet need overhaul badly, wouldn't it make sense to do some buying of big buses as to not lead to problems in the 2010-2012 timeframe when almost all of the fleet reaches retirement? You probably know more than me on the matter though, thanks for clearing some stuff out (then again, didn't you once say that they had O7's and Opus's on order?) |
