Re: ''You Can't Sit Down'': CTA

The one that wasn't around when NYCT's predecessors were already serving people for decades?

Irrelevant

It is relevant. Comparing NYC's subway to WMATA is comparing apples and oranges, as it has already been pointed out.

The one that regularly doesn't run full-length trains?

The Orange line runs 8 car trains. The Red Line runs every 2-3 minutes during rush hour.

As John has explained, WMATA is not theoretically anywhere near its actual design capacity. The Orange Line runs some 8 car trains during rush hours only (as do the Red and Green Lines). The Red Line has a 2.5 minute headway between Grosvenor and Silver Spring because it doesn't share trackage with any other line. At the peak of the peak, the Orange Line and Green Line have trippers such that the trains are every 2-4 minutes apart instead of every 6.

The one that doesn't have an unlimited ride fare option?

Incorrect. There is an all day pass.

There are some other unlimited ride options, but they aren't used by many and must be used as paper passes, they can't be used with SmarTrip. The One Day Pass, as Terrapin Station pointed out, isn't good from 5 to 9:30 AM on weekdays (except federal holidays). They used to have more and different unlimited passes, but they were discontinued due to low use.

The one that doesn't operate 24/7?

Because it isn't necessary. Most of the ridership is 9 to 5 workers who work in DC and live in Montgomery County or Virginia. On Fridays and Saturdays it runs until 3 AM.

I'm sure the riders who come in from PG County, especially the crowded Branch Avenue side of the Green Line, will appreciate your comment. So will all the 10 hour federal workers who don't work 9 to 5. Or the people who use Metro to get to Verizon Center, RFK Stadium, Nationals Park, Strathmore Hall, and other late night destinations. And the people who work on weekends and have lobbied for the system to open earlier on Saturdays and Sundays. I could go on, but I won't. At least if you are going to use the 3 AM opening for any type of argument, point out that ridership drops off after 2 AM to the point where the last hour of service is funded entirely by the DC government (MD and VA don't chip in) and riders are charged rush hour fares for the last hour to help recover the costs.

WMATA has good points and bad points just like every other system

I never said the WMATA was flawless. It isn't. I'm merely saying that the Metro is better than any other system in the country and that BART is a close second.

I wouldn't know that from reading your posts. Your ranking of WMATA and BART remains subjective. End of disucssion.
