Speaking of "cab rides". I remember once, also in the early 90's, a friend and I were up by FREMONT junction over by the Fresh Pond LIRR yard, where that bridge for the NY COnnecting RR crosses over the LIRR Montauk Branch (by the M Train).
The Conrail crew came up from somewhere along the Bay Ridge line, and usually stopped at Fremont to pick up their train from the LIRR interchange there. They had 3 B23-7's, and they stopped were we were taking photos (it wasn't "strange" back then). They asked us if we wanted to see the inside of the engines, and we said yes, so they took us in and showed us everything. Then they said, would you like to ride up to Oak Point? We said, sure... So they took us from glendale, over the Hell Gate Bridge to the Bronx. I still remember it to this day, it was such a cool ride. Of course, then we had to find our way home from the Bronx, but it was well worth it.....

We often used to hang out on that bridge too....even bringing lunch from the Burger king over at Metro-Mall by the M's Metropolitan stop. Sit on the bridge, and watch the LIRR trains go by underneath. The LIRR engineers would even wave and toot the horn as they went by under us..... Imagine that today. It's not "that long ago.....
