Be nice to see it used. I've gone through there a few times, and it's actually quite nice. :)

I rode the K once, in August of 1976, shortly before I moved to L. A. (around the same time that the K was discontinued). Not sure if I rode over the connection or only in Manhattan (the purpose of my ride was to ride every full-length line (i.e., no shuttles) at least once without leaving the system). I wish I had saved the list of what I rode! I had it for several years after I arrived in L. A., but eventually threw it out. If only I had known there would be a SubChat years later... All I remember is that I started on the A at Franklin Ave (A was local in Brooklyn 24/7 back then), started a little after 7 AM in order to ride the 3 rush-hour only lines (CC, K, QB) (I didn't consider the 5 express in Bronx from 241 (today's <5>) or the 6 Pelham Express (today's <6>) as separate routes. I got the QB and the K out of the way fairly early, but it was after 9:00 and I still had to ride the CC. I was on the Central Park Dash n/b (back when it really was a dash), don't remember if I was on the A or the D, hoping I'd overtake a CC, fortunately I did and rode to 161/River, where I transferred to the 4. I also remember riding the LL to Myrtle/Wycoff and transferring to the M. Or did I transfer to the GG at Lorimer? Anyway, I might do it again someday, only this time I'll include the shuttles, and I'll try to ride each line only once (in 76, I had to ride a few lines twice).

Honestly, Zman, I thought this was an early April Fool's joke because I never thought in a million years the MTA would even consider running the M and V trains as a through service. Just that they are considering it is enough of a surprise to me. I will reserve speculation for when they actually decide what to do.

Agreed. The MTA should have stuck to married pairs and should have linked the R62s and 68s that way instead of linking them into permament four- and five-car sets. Now, trains are either too short or too long for off-peak service.

What overcrowding? The V will still run on Queens Boulevard, even if it is extended to Metro (the key word there is "IF"). You will still have both the R and V trains running there. You might even have weekend V service. What's wrong with that?

I remember those days. The weekends were a hoot. From CIS to 57/7 and back again with four cars. What a miserable experience. Times Square, 34th Street and Canal Street just to name a few. At Canal Street you would have to stop at the punch at the 4 car marker in the middle of the station and you'd have hoards of people way up in front of you. And every one of them had a comment to make as they passed the cab window.

Yes. And some time ago, it seems that the idea was also raised within NYCT, according to all the best media leaks; just you were too busy being a pompous ass to notice it.

Are you so stupid you don't understand how a leak works? Your boss tells a journalist. Or a blogger -- it's the same difference these days. He daren't tell all his underlings, else they would know that it was he who leaked it.

Zman is 100% right in saying that this board concluded that the consolidation a done deal because he mentioned that NYCT was considering the idea. Nothing could be farther than the truth. I can assure the board that NYCT is considering lots of stuff that you and I haven't even thought of. They are a lot smarter than we give them credit for.

Transit operations planning isn't rocket science. Even when people on this board have no information, if they're not off on some tangent, the tendency is toward accuracy.

It's happened before. Unless it happens this time, I would bet on it happening again.

Just because some foamer gets over-enthusiastic about an idea on Subchat and never gives up doesn't mean that it doesn't get considered from time to time. And I should clarify that I neither care either way on this issue, nor have I received any leaks about this set of proposed service cuts.

But M is on every station on the M line from Met to Essex so something has to be changed anyhow.

That's correct, but NONE of the current V stations would need to be changed.

From What I understand, the reason that K wasn't used for the J Line skip stop was because after it ceased being used for the 8 Av lcl, it was planned to used it for an alternative L skip stop service which never materialized.

IINM, I heard it was supposed to be a Y train, but I could be wrong on that, it's a long time ago (like 20 years) that I remember reading about that.

Again, I like the M better...but

The funny thing though about this service cut would be that it also would be a service enhancement too, and can be plugged that way. It's one of the few service cuts which also have a flip side of also being a service enhancement for many.

Now that will affect the Q. Not only will you have that merge, but another train at DeKalb. Just send it through the rathlole, done.

When there was talk about a possible 168 to 168 service it was back when double letters were still being used and it would have been a AA service. Which 6 Av shuttle are you talking about because the KK and later K service always ran from 57/6 to at least E/Pky.

I never heard about that one and I was in the schedule office from 1976 till 1997 with only a brief period in 1983 - 84 as a trainmaster and most of that was spent on a special assignment to the schedule office anyhow.

I agree but the MSBA import to the NYCTA who served as an excuse for a director of NYCTA surface service planning who livedi n Long Island and probably had less than no knowledge of Bkln Bus service decided that numbers are cheap and that anew number would alert the passengers to the combined service. He must have though that the riding public was as stupid as he is. Logically since the new B-82 was a combination of the B-5 with the B-50 using the number 5 would have been logical since the 5 digit was an integral part of the B-50 designation anyhow.

Some weekend GOs involving the D operating through Essex St specified that the equipment used for that service MUST be 8 car trains of 60 ft cars either R-32s or 42s.

That might work, however, I believe before the merger the plan was to have the M terminate with the J at Broad Street, so I don't know if we would see a revival of what essentially would be the "Brown R" train (or in this case the M only running in the peak direction rush hours to Bay Parkway).

The problem with that comes on the Queens end, as the E does go to Jamaica Center. Those getting on there and in the first three stops (or transferring from the J at Sutphin Blvd.) before the E joins the F at Briarwood-Van Wyck would be confused if it were the V along with those before 71st-Continental.
