It's not an overpayment if the C/R charges the prescribed fare as stated on the fare card. By definition, the legitimate fare cannot be an overpayment. |

With regard to coins, if I gave the conductor 8 quarters for the $2 fare, he would have had to take it. |

If the conductor is charging what the LIRR says is the correct fare then he can't be overcharging. This is a no word humping zone - move out |

They are paying the correct fare according the LIRR, therefore they are not being overcharged. As I said, the practice of rounding off fares to the nearest dollar has been in practice for years when purchasing an on-board ticket. Hence you are incorrect. You do not set fare policy. The LIRR sets them with the approval of the MTA. |

Posted by Train Dude on Wed Aug 22 17:25:21 2012, in response to Re: LIRR Fare Ripoff Hoax..., posted by TERRapin station on Wed Aug 22 16:49:03 2012. Because what you have been writing all along is wrong. You are wrong. You do not set the fare policy for the LIRR. The LIRR sets it with the consent of the MTA. If the MTA and the LIRR deem the on board Step-up fare to be the difference between the old fare and the new fare rounded off to the nearest dollar amount, then that's the correct fare. If the conductor collects that fare, then by definition, the customer is paying the correct fare and is not being over-charged. It is what it is. Get over it. |

One would think, that to round to the nearest Dollar would be more equitable, and eventual even out, but upward, is more profitable, and leaves a longer lasting message. |

I agree but it is also consistent with the "on-board fare" policy! There the also seem to add the on-board fee to the ticket and then round off to the next highest dollar amount. It may be inequitable but as long as the customers are being charged what's on the fare card, they are not being "over-charged". |
