The "rule" was while going northbound to change the front sign from F to Q at B'way/Laf. Perhaps there were some inconsistencies as perhaps the non-regulars didn't do that, a regular guy forgot, or a c/r neglected to adjust the side sign readings.

That's a recurring problem on this board. So many people have trains on the mind 24/7, instead of naked women, so while they're sleeping they dream of things related to trains happening and swear up and down that what they drempt really happened.

I know I wasn't dreaming one night in 1982 when I was midnights on the D. Southbound at Atlantic Ave. with 4 cars, I made a proper stop at the north end of the station. Upon leaving, at the south end at the 10 car marker, I glimpsed at a pair of spread female legs with a gyrating naked ass giving this broad the pounding of her life on top of the sandbox. 27 years ago! Just think, if a baby was conceived, it could now be a c/r!

The train wasn't called an "F/Q" per se but it did carry an F/Q side roll sign which read "F between Stillwell and 50/6 Q between 50/6 and 21 St/Queensbridge." The M/M were to display the F end sign until 50/6 and change the sign to Q at 50 St. S/B the M/M was to display the Q end sign from 21 St to 50 St and then change it to F for the remainder of the trip. The TA's logic behind this was that rather than confusing passengers by showing 3 services operating to 21 St (B, F, and Q) officially only 2 services would operate to 21 St, the B and Q. Never mind the fact that passengers would be more confused by a train that changed its identity enroute. Another example of the "cesspool of incompetence" that makes up much of the TA's managerial staff!

The problem with you guys is you don't even know when the exact changes happened. ::Rollseyes::

Why would you make a statement like that? Not all events have an exact date or time and many that post on this board do try to give the best answer. I had to go back to 24 years old files to answer your question and even then I made a typographic error. I really don't know if you are asking honest questions or trying to start a flamage war. Even though the changeover occured on May 6,1985 you cannot change all the signs on all the trains overnight.

I can tell you that I rode my last "CC" on 6/21/85. It was an R-10 # 3198. I rode my last "LL" on that date also. It was an R-30 #8543. I didn't ride my last "RR" until 9/28/85 over four months after the changeover. It was another R-30 8293.

A similar situation occurred when the BMT/IND route changed for Chrystie St in 1967. Although I'm sure that in 1959 when the R-27s and 30s were ordered and definitely by the time the R032s and 38s were ordered, the TA had some idea of the service patterns to be operated with the divisional merger, for some reason, the R-27s through 38s had a "C/8 Av Express" on their side roll signs but neglected to include a "B/6 Av Express" reading on either the side or front signs. As a result, when Chrystie opened, only R-9s and the rare R-10 that ran on the B Line displayed proper signs. The R-32s and 27/30s that operated on the B carried either "BB" signs or had a black letter on white "B" decal pasted over the "BB" until new signs were installed reading "B/Via 6 Avenue. Many R-9s didn't receive "EE/Via Broadway" side signs in time either and some R-9s had the "8 Ave" painted out on the roll signs so that they read simply "EE Local" with a blank space where the "8 Ave" used to be. Many of the R-32s never received proper signs until the double letters were eliminated and they received entirely new sets of signs.

Randy: Your so right. They were building the Chrystie Street Subway for almost tens years and it seems like they decided what routes to run through it about a week before it opened. Do you remember the flyer containing a map of all the new routes but one of the most widely advertised new routes ,the "NX" wasn't on it? Of course from a railfan point of view it was a marvelous time. Nearly every kind of car turned up on every line. About the only thing we didn't see was a Standard on the Myrtle Avenue El south of Broadway.

At the time Chrystie opened, the area between Bway/Myrtle and Bridge St was railroad NORTH. It was only changed when the M was through to Stillwell to replace the QJ. By the way the QB was an afterthought to placate the Brighton passengers who wanted some sort of direct service to the Bway subway. Fortunately, all the equipment except for the R-9s and R-10s had QB roll signs.

As I have mentioned before, according to an old time ERA member who is a professional engineer, the Myrtle could hold anything that the NYCTS had including the D Types. It's just that the stations couldn't clear a 10 ft wide car. The original Fulton St structure was a different story since it was a differently built cast iron structure that could only hold either wooden or extremely lightweight cars such as Multis.

The MJ sign couldn't be displayed since the Q cars had no roll signs. Actually when Chrystie first opened, the M and LL still had steels running on them and they couldn't display the proper route designations either. I was only when the R-9s went to the Eastern Div that proper route signs were displayed.

The IRT 3rd Avenue El in The Bronx was still running with Lo-V's and Steinways and they couldn't display the #8 and I don't think that any of the IRT cars had "SS" readings either. Though they did have a "SHUTTLE" reading.

IIRC the R-12/14s had 8 signs, but they had an Astoria subscript.
