Which makes sense, and would likely need for there to be no service on the express track.

The (D) to Whitehall on the other end is a bit of a surprise, but makes sense in that it allows for transfers at Metrotech and also to/from the (4)/(5) at Court Street (and at Whitehall, the (1)).

That was written not knowing the (D) would be running to Whitehall on one end or 2nd Avenue on the other. That move makes a lot of sense because there now will be transfers to the (2)/(3)/(4)/(5) at Court Street as well as Atlantic-Pacific AND also to the (A)/(F) at Metrotech and (1) at Whitehall.

Is such a shuttle planned? I didn't see any mention of it, but maybe I read too fast and missed it. It does seem like it is needed, since otherwise 21 St.-Queensbridge is cut off from any other Queens stations. But on the other hand, it never connects with local stations west of Roosevelt anyway. Maybe so few people use the station to head east into Queens that the MTA didn't feel the shuttle bus was justified.

A plan that would avoid turning Queensbridge station into a dead end terminal would be to through-route the Bronx D with the Brooklyn F, and run the F from Queens to 57 St.-7 Av., where passengers could connect with the N or R. (The Q would terminate at Times Square.) Another advantage is that there would be a direct transfer between the two "D" services at Jay St.-Metrotech, rather than the "A" or "F" being needed to connect them as in the current plan. On the other hand, the two parts of what is normally the "F" line would connect only via the much slower "R" (or "N" via tunnel). And having two different lines in Brooklyn running trains labeled "D" would be confusing.

Interesting thought on the split (D), which I sort of had in my original idea where the (D) would run with the (F) to Coney Island via 8th Avenue and also with the (J) extended to Coney Island via 4th Avenue and the West End to replace that (D) in Brooklyn (the two lines would have connected at Essex-Delancy) while the (M) would have replaced the (E) via 8th Avenue on the overnights, allowing for that line to also be used to switch to the (J) for the Brooklyn run, albeit having to go down and up at Essex.

Maybe they don't want to overburden the shuttle. Instead of using alternative trains, those wanting to go further into Queens might take the Q to the shuttle when they could take take the E or F directly.

Good. Then I think the plan they are going with is probably the best one after all. It doesn't really matter that the Bronx and Brooklyn "D" trains don't directly connect, since the pairing of the lines into one service is only for operational convenience. Nobody (or almost nobody) actually rides between the Grand Concourse and New Utrecht Ave.

I would have avoided Queensboro stub and running the D in two segments by:

- F from Queens normal to 63 St and then south on Q/R starting at 57th
- At 34th St, RELABLE the F to D, continue to R to Dekalb and then normal D route to Coney Island (those needing F service in Brooklyn would to be told remain on the D and switch at MetroTech)

- D from Bronx normal to West 4th via 8th Ave
- At 34th St, RELABLE the D to F, and then normal F route to Coney Island (those needing D service in Brooklyn would be told remain on the F and switch at MetroTech)

That's what some people need to understand. Lines are there for operational purposes, rarely does one person ride from one end of a line to another. That became an argument with the merging of the M and V "Who's going to ride from Metropolitan Ave to Forest Hills when they could a a bus?" Ugh.

I suppose that would work, though at 8th Avenue/34th that would mean having to go under and over from the D/F to get the other. The only concern might have been the split (F) with those who actually use it from Queens-Brooklyn, but that could have been handled by advising those riders to take the (E) to Court Square to the (G) OR during FastTrack extending the (G) in Queens to 71st-Continental to accommodate those riders who actually would be affected by a split (F).

The answer is:

The map shows evening service patterns (with the C still running, and the 3 still going to brooklyn), but doesn't make mention of where the B and M disappeared to. There are other associated issues with that, like the 4 being shown as the only Joralemon service, but a green line still being extended down the Nostrand ave IRT.

The one thing they could have done diferently is with the promotion of alternate stations. Most of the alternates advise you to use a Broadway or BMT or 8th Ave IND station. They could have advised people to use the 7th ave IRT, which is only one block away, and connects with the northern D at 59th-CC and the Southern D at South Ferry/Whitehall.

An alternative to that would be to operate the Southern D with Eastern Division equipment and run it to Essex, so it could connect to the F for people who used 8th avenue stations.

No, but I would think there are some who do take the (G) from Queens to Hoyt-Schermerhorn or so. That would have in this case with a split (F) justified extending the (G) to at least Queens Plaza to connect with the (F), which will be operating via 53rd during FastTrack,
