WMATA: Pictures of 7k cars

From WMATA's MetroForward Flicker photostream.

The truck in the picture above is not the truck that will be used under the cars. It is an outboard frame narrow gauge truck for use on the Japanese railways.

This is a picture of the truck that will be used, it was ripped from the 24 second youtube video tease.

The M Metro logo is embossed on the dark wedge between the seat back pairs

Hmm...so the operator windows now slide down like they do in NY?

The logo on the side of the car may be better in black or another dark color so that it stands out.

This car sure is different...

The seats look hard and thin-cushioned, by D.C. standards.

I don't like the splat of logo on the sides. It looks sloppy.

The windscreen glass should be clear.

Looks like the end of the semi-railfan view out the front of the cars, replaced by that nasty polarized window. Combined with an interior that just screams "stabbing and drunk ready" this design is a real step back for Metro. Looks like another system bites the dust when it comes to rider comfort.

Ah, I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels this way...although I wouldn't go as far as to call it "stabbing and drunk ready"...just easier to clean, lol. I know that in regards to the carpeting, some people have been complaining about them being a bit funky during inclement weather. I rode a Rohr set that smelled like sweaty gym socks and it wasn't so pleasant. It would've been nice to see carpet accents on the wall or ceiling similar to motorcoaches, though.

While I guess it has 21st Century style, the 7000s don't appear to be as inviting or have any of the warmth of the other cars in the fleet.

yes, and as a sign of maturity stepping away from the cushy suburban living room feel toward a genuine urban subway is good. BART is fi9nally scrapping t6he filth sponge carpeting. It would be smart of them to piggyback on the 7k production--if capitalist propaganda were to be believed a longer production should reduce the unit cost.

Why? They essentially eliminated almost all the features whose value you've extolled in the past, replacing them with the same antiseptic design elements you claim to detest in NYCT's newest rolling stock. Why is it that when NYCT does one thing you revile them, yet when WMATA does the same thing you've 'died and gone to heaven'?

The contract goes like this:
  • Base contract: 64 cars - Dulles Phase 1
  • Option 4: 300 cars - Fleet Renewal (1000 Series)
  • Unfunded
  • Option 3: 100 cars - Mid-Life Rehabilitation (4000 Series)

  • Option 2: 130 cars - Growth 75% Eight-Car Trains
  • Option 5: 90 cars - Growth 100% Eight-Car Trains

*Total Project Scope = 748 cars
Procurement contract awarded:
  • Base contract 128 cars - Dulles Phase I and II
  • Option 1: 300 cars - Fleet Renewal (1000 Series)
*Total Project Scope = 648 new cars, 100 rehabilitate cars.

Last I heard the 100 4k cars will be replaced instead of being rehabilitate increase the production to 748.

All or the cars will numbered in the 7000s, don't know what numbers will be assigned to each option within the 7000s.

It looks like that's mostly attributable to WMATA having a longer car with fewer doors and not using what windows they have as housings for the exterior displays. I'll admit that's nicer, but the MTA can't exactly go to two or three doors on a 60 foot long car.

The windows are smaller compared to the cars in the existing fleet, that's because the end doors are closer to the center of the car.

WMATA's cars have always had the panel at the doors. Though various seating reconfiguration have eliminated some to increase standing capacity.

These cars will not have the panels on the left side of the center door. The 6k cars only had them on the right side of the center doors.

I haven't heard it either, but I like the name. I don't mind the logo - at least it's not as pretentious as calling it "America's Subway" as they did in the renderings.

I hope the red white and blue stripe at the ends of the car will return. To me, it's as important as having the mini flag decal on the sides of the Metrobuses.

I feel his present approval of the WMATA 7K car, as a choice for Staten Island service, over an MTA clones, is based on the needs, and use of he riders of Richmond.
Some services need unique equipment.
One size does NOT fit all!

It would be a good choice for some LIRR Branches Too!
I'm thinking of the Port Washington Branch, and the Far Rockaway / Atlantic Ave-Brooklyn Branch.

Who is calling it that?

Read it in one or more of the Washington CD urban planning / transit centric blogs.

BART can't piggyback. They will always have to custom order. :(
