DART is unique in having one of the few variable voltage power distribution system in North America. Each substation is polled for energy usage and voltages are varied according to energy used and energy needed. An energy management system logs and predicts the amount of energy needed by the system based on usage history and predicted schedule. The energy management system's main purpose is to reduce energy costs while providing proper energy to the light rail vehicle. Not all substations have to be operational for the light rail system to work. In the event of loss of utility power to a substation, the system is designed to provide enough power to compensate.Very interesting. A section of catenary is only energized when a train is in it. |

I think that they just mean that they distribute more power to busy sections rather than have everything constant. |

Substations at 1½- to 1¾-mile intervals is pretty close together, and a lot of them.It seems like a standard distance. The blue line in LA has 20 substations on a 22 mile long line. Basically one per station. I don't think that it could run 3-car trains every 5-6 minutes with any less. |
