Substations at 1½- to 1¾-mile intervals is pretty close together, and a lot of them.

It seems like a standard distance. The blue line in LA has 20 substations on a 22 mile long line. Basically one per station. I don't think that it could run 3-car trains every 5-6 minutes with any less.
