When something slimar came out R188 had the same thing w/ the 34, the cars will most likely be called 179s, the 34 is for something else. |

I suspect the "34" refers to the division within NYCT, i.e. RTOLACMTA does something similar with their operating divisions. My friend who is a B/O at MTA division 10 (Gateway) officially works in MTA department 3210, while mechanics and service attendants at that same yard are in department 3310 (or is it 3110?) You get the idea. |

This is the R-179 contract for the next generation of new cars, probably to fully replace the R32, R42 and allow for the R44 scrapping to begin. Interesting to see the 100 "4 car" units, most likely for the C line. |

The 10 X 4 car units are just about the right number to replace the remaining Eastern Div R-42s. In all likelihood, the 5 car units will enable the C to go to 600 ft trains. That would basically mean that IND and BMT Southern lines will be 600 ft trains and BMT Eastern trains will be 480 ft trains. |

M to Forest Hills means the current 50 R42s will have to stay for a while.10 X 4 = 40, not 100. 40 R160As is not excessive at all to replace 50 R42s. The R44s will be gone long before the first R179 is built. |

R44s have significant problems not seen in the R32 or R42 fleet. It is logical that one would retire the cars that NEED to be retired before older ones that could hold on for a while. |

The difference between R34160 and R34179 is smaller than the difference between R34068 and R34142. Although considering the difference in time between these four orders, such would make sense. |

Hmm, as for numbering...although the R-179s will almost certainly replace the R-32s (and 42s), for awhile at least, those types will be in the fleet together, which means none of the 32s' numbers (3350-3949) can be used. If they skip over the R-110B, they could start at 3010 (or 3011) and end at 3299/3300. The R-44s will probably be gone by the time the 179s arrive, but that would not free up enough numbers (pinned in by the R-68As (up to 5200) and the R-46s (starting at 5478)). Either that, or skip over to the 4000s (which is clear up to 4787). |

Anyway, they would be recycling the car numbers recycled as last used on the R-10's. I wonder if MTA NYC Transit would put an optional clause in the R-179 contract to receive additional cars, just as in the R-160 contract(s), but probably not way too much. -William A. Actually, if the B of T had waited another year or so, the R-10s might very well have looked like a 60 ft long 10 ft wide R-15 with axiflow fans, porthole door windows and inside cab door controls. I actually think that the maroon with silver and beige racing stripes paint scheme of the R-15s (which was also used on the TA acquired SIRT cars) was one of the nicest paint schemes on the NYCTS. It ranks up there with the turquoise and white of the R36s and R-10s. I also do like the green illuminated destination signs that came on evereything up to and including the R-38s and was sorry to see them eliminated. I was also disappointed when in the late 1960s, the TA started replacing the green sign tubes with white ones since I felt it took away from the appearance of the cars. |

Although the restored car is close, the actual shade of maroon on both the R-15s and the R-17s was darker than on the restored cars. I understand that the color on the transit museum cars was made deliberately lighter so that it would show up better in the incandescent lighting of the museum. |

I think they should order a helluva lot more 4 car units. Use them on the C line. That increases the pool of 4-car units should ENY need more of them for service expansion. A 10 car train can reaplace an 8 car train on the C, the opposite cannot be done on the J/M/L/Z. |
