One justification for CBTC was that trains could run at tighter headways than with block signaling, so they should eventually increase service on the 7 beyond compensating for the extension. |

The 3's terminals vary between New Lots and Times Square. Some 1 trains terminate at 137th Street. And don't forget the occasional G.O. that requires either the 1 or the 3 to end at 14th Street. Yet no one seems to be suggesting the 1 or 3 get R142s. Why should the 4 be any different?By the way, one more reason not to put the 7's R62As on the 2: the LED circle/diamond signs. They work on the 7 because the side rollsigns are set on the 7 in the diamond. That 7 is in a smaller print size than the 7 in the circle, so you can see the 7 peaking through. However, there is no diamond-2, so you will not be able to see the 2 clearly with the LED display surrounding it. |

In some cases compatibility may be better for a more efficient operation. In any event, If the MTA issues certain specs, the any car manufacturer should be able to meet them. What seems to be lacking in this country, and possibly in the world, today is a sense of OBLIGATION. If companies and even individuals were made to realize that their very survival is contingent on meeting all imposed standards then we would all be better off. |

Think back to the days of the Manhattan el when M/M had to have 2 brake handles one each for gate and MUDCs and another plus an electric brake key for the composites. Then around 1950, when the Qs were replacing the composites, they had to carry 3 brake handles, a reverser, an electric brake key and a controller handle for the Qs. When the SMEEs were being introduced, the mainline crews needed a brake handle, 2 reversers, an electric brake key and a cutting key. BMT M/M who worked lines that used both subway and elevated equipment like Myrtle and Fulton needed 2 brake handles, a reverser, brake plug and an elevated (BU, Q) controller handle. It's all part of the job. |

There are NO passenger railcar builders in the US. How many companies have built subway cars for NYC in the last 35 years? (Alstom (itself and in joint venture), Bombardier, and Kawasaki), and of those, only one comes back again and again for each order.Kawasaki has a record of success in building mass transit cars for the US market that's really unmatched. |

It's more like an advertisement to sell elsewhere and a bunch of execs getting more to put on their résumés. At least, it started that way with the PA-4 and I don't think the practice has changed. It's a company that lost the R160 bid to Alstom yet decided to become a subcontractor to Alstom's lower bid. |

IIRC, R142A came first and most of its tests were based at E180. I remember Kawasaki and its suppliers people stationed at E180 at the time. Bomb's R142 came later and used the same facilities although a bit altered. The R142A eventually ended up in service on the Pelham line later on.So unless they removed something since then, E180 should be able to service both too. |
