The article is wrong. Cards expired < 1 year can be turned in to the booth for replacement. I'd think Gene Sovietoff would know that.

Or go the the MVM's and put it in, it will tell you that the card expired and give you a new one with the money on it. I think it the MVM's tell you within a mouth of the card is ready to exprir and give you a new one then.

MVM's don't have the trade in function anymore. At first it was available. But there were alot of people trading in alot of damaged and empty cards and getting away with it. If not jamming up the machines.

If you have an expired metrocard, you CAN trade it in an MVM machine.
Ask the machine to refill the card and it will ask you if you want a new card with the amount left on the card. You have 1 year from the expiration date to do this.

Correct -- that will work from one month before expiration until 12 months after expiration.

Can you combine MetroCards? I have a card with $11 and another with $1, and getting down to $1 every single time is getting on my god damn nerves.

Yes. Trade in the expired (or nearly expired) card. The machine will ask if you want the balance put on a new card or you'd rather add it to the existing card.

Or ask an S/A.

Or use it on a bus and pay the difference in cash. (I recently did that by accident, only I didn't have cash and I needed the transfer to the subway in any case.)

Once you were able to transfer value from a pay-per-ride metrocard to anohter at a MVM. That feture was taken off a while back because people figured out how to bend cards to fool machines into thinking empty cards still had money on it. If you can trade value by adding money to expired cards, I'll admit I've been wrong.

No, the feature that was disabled was the trade-in option that used to be on the main menu for all PPR cards. Trade-ins are still available for cards that have expired or are about to expire.

Washington Metrorail allows you to add value to your card. How did they avoid the fraud problem?

there's enough fraud going down Pennsylvania Avenue so Metrorail's clean.

The fraud problem is a bug. Rather than fix the bug, the issue was avoided by disallowing trade-ins (in most cases).
