Used to be one on 22nd street btwn 6th and 7th avenue. there was also train world on 23rd street near Park Avenue.memories. |

Used to hang out there all the time. They had tons of vintage Lionel gear.Someone bought the place out and moved it to Michigan and ran it there for a while. Apparently there were several semi trailers full of Lionel gear stuffed into that little building. They then closed in Michigan and had a huge auction of all of the stuff. It's sad, but that seems to be a reflection on interest in model trains in general. I was at FAO Schwarz last month and their entire train selection consisted of Lionel's PRR freight set, NYCS 3-car add-on shorty passenger cars set, and the Harry Potter Hogwarts Express set; and a selection of Thomas & Friends wooden trains. No HO or N scale sets whatsoever. Very slim pickings. Target -- at least the one by Brooklyn College -- is worse. I have yet to see any train sets for sale there.It seems that "boy toys" tend toward the computer & video game or RC markets, while "girl toys" are still more... traditional??? ...with dolls, Easy Bake Ovens, etc. I'm not sure if this is a result of the mindset of the buyers for these stores, a lack of broad spectrum advertising on the part of the model train industry, or, more likely, a combination of the two that's failing to get and keep train sets on the store shelves. Out of sight, out of mind, right? |

I remember Madison Hardware (lots of Lionel), Carmen Webster's MREC and Polk's. All great stores.Model Railroad Equipment Corporation carried a full line of just about everything Silver Leaf made, wrote or imported. She demanded a higher level of discount from vendors, but could she move the merchandise!! MREC, in addition ro having a big O scale/gauge section in the back was Brass Heaven!! I guess that's not such a big deal now. A big O Scale steam artic at around $600 (1965 dollars) was to die for. |

A few more to add to the list, Terminal Hobby Shop 58 Courtland StModel Craft and hobbies 314 5th Ave bought some books there. House of Mulraney Trainland Lynbrook L.I. bought my Unimat SL there and it still works fine, Franklin Hobby shop 81 Franklin Ave, Levitown L.I. Wadell Hobbies, 6 Newkirk Ave I got some cheap O scale freight cars there, and my favorite hobby shop Nagenast on Fresh Pond Rd is no more, this was around 57, so much was lost what a shame. Karl M |

Hello, I was told about a Herbert Walthers that used to work at Ma Webster's.Apparently he used to scratch build steam locomotives. I have a large brass challenger I was told may have been built by him. I am trying to locate any information on the man or shop owners that I can. I am trying to match this engine up with it's proper builder's name as it is so amazing to look at, it deserves to have it's creators name re-tied to it instead of being lost to history.
