train speed over Manhattan Bridge.

I have been riding the trains over the manhattan bridge since the late 1970's The trains always seem to go about the same speed but I will admit they appear to be going a bit faster since the construction was completed in 2004. I rode PATCO into NJ last year and the train flew over the bridge. Is there a specific reason why the trains go so slow over the bridge?

Its a very steep downgrade once u hit the top of the bridge......

Is there a specific reason why the trains go so slow over the bridge?

On the Manhattan Bridge, you have 25 mph grade timers on the decline in both directions on both sides; the need for timers here probably has to do with minimizing bridge flexing and swaying caused by passing trains.

There's also the issue of control. Mist from the river below does tend to do some track lubrication, and you DO want to stop if you have to. :)

Pity that folks don't understand also how little contact there is on rails by the wheel treads when the track is completely dry.

I'm sure the grade in Philly is MUCH more gentle. But yeah, folks might not realize that the contact area between a 36 inch or so train wheel and the rail is about the size of a dime. And a little "juice" makes a hell of a lot less friction. And on a downhill, you want all the friction you can get. :)

Forgive the dumb question, does the newer equiptment or any TA equiptment for that matter, have any slip-slide braking ability, ALA Metro-North-LIRR???

My guess is that it's because of the grade. I know that it's apples to oranges, but out light rail trains go 55 mph on level ground, but they slow to 25 mph over smaller bridges. I'm pretty sure that the issues are the grade and line of sight.

I believe they all do, to varying degrees of reliability. We've supposedly come a long way since the clop-clop-clop of artens. Heh.

Actually the speed on the Man. Brdge was increased over the years from 15 M.P.H. to 25 M.P.H. (after re-building) In addition, 115 Rail was installed (replaced 100 lb rail) across the span. Rumor has it that it was taken out--(weight issue) but I cannot confirm-

Plus PATCO train are run by Computers, so that also aloud them to run faster.

I was able to get train up to 50mph in the river tube 8years ago, with the timer back then. You would not see the timer clear. I called it a 50mph Key By, But now if you try it in Bypass you will be tripped. I know, now when I work the L line and I have a train in Bypass I lucky to get the trian up to 35mph at the last timer even those its singed up at 50.

PATCO trains do NOT fly over the Ben Franklin Bridge. Max speed is 30 MPH.

The TA has slowed way down since your time with the handles. Supposedly in the name of safety. PATCO still zips along quite fast in New Jersey. SEPTA 100 (renamed the Norristown High Speed Line as part of their rebranding program) still moves along at a nice clip (MAS 65 mph). The Hiawatha Line in Minneapolis actually makes it up to 55 in a couple of spots.

One of the problems seems to be the inability to design a good signal/train control system. The SEPTA 100 is painfully slow coming into the 69th Street berth. I have watched operators try all kinds of different methods. They always end up having to come to a dead stop at least once. SEPTA Market-Frankord is quite efficient, except between 40th Street and 52nd Street. Signal/train control system to blame, not the operator. Minneapolis seems to be an exception. I don't see any sign of the signal/train control system screwing with the operator. Follow the speed control signs; no problems with beeping and having to brake multiple times at a speed change.

Dallas DART also operates of 65mph on certain sections.
