I'm sure the grade in Philly is MUCH more gentle. But yeah, folks might not realize that the contact area between a 36 inch or so train wheel and the rail is about the size of a dime. And a little "juice" makes a hell of a lot less friction. And on a downhill, you want all the friction you can get. :)
